Surveying the field of first-person action games on mobile devices, we found that too many of them are based on tired concepts that have run their course on consoles. Big game publishers, and even some of the independents, are creating games for mobile devices, utilizing new technology, but they are not breaking new ground and taking advantage of the capabilities of mobile devices. We've always felt that strategy, teamwork, and collaboration are the key elements that draw us into first-person action games, and keep us coming back again and again, much more than simply riding the rails through a multitude of cut-sequences with no real challenge other than determination. From this, our vision was born, to create a ground-breaking, first-person action game that brings together the best elements of our favorite console games, while utilizing the mobile technology and gamer sophistication to redefine what first-person gaming can be on the mobile platform.
That being said, we realized early on that an idea alone, and a desire for a better game, were not enough to get our concept out to the world of mobile gamers. We knew we had enough money to get started, to turn the concept into code, and get a playable demo. We also discovered early on that MSU has a great game development program, with students and faculty looking to partner with private industry to give students the opportunity of real-world development challenges. Out of this our partnership was born. We provided the concept, requirements, and seed money to get started, and over the past year, with two classes of students, we have developed a playable, networked, prototype that allows up to four players to work together in a basic map against another squad. Concept proven. We're ready to take it to the next level.
Intel on The Target
Greater Play has developed The Target and partnered with students at Michigan State University to create a competition between teams unlike current multiplayer games, by providing a cool environment called the Safe House that promotes team communication and decision making by committee. We've integrated unique functionality like buying Intel and borrowing items from a teammates customized Armory to help you execute "a flawless mission" that will earn you Elite Status Points that are posted for everyone to see. If you’re looking for a team based challenge that will keep you on your toes then we know you’re gonna love playing The Target.
In The Target, you start as an unknown mercenary with the ability to customize your character with Weapons, Skills and Equipment in your Armory. You will then join your squad that consists of 2 to 4 players in a Safe House before your mission begins.
The upgradeable Safe House is where your Squad will receive missions from The Company. These missions will consist of multiple objectives that need to be completed simultaneously forcing your Squad to develop a strategy to split up the tasks.
There will be a second Squad receiving their mission at the same time with objectives that may get in your way so be prepared for anything. You can purchase Intel from various informants that may provide an advantage that helps you achieve your goals. However, this Intel comes at a price and may require you to purchase additional items or skills that your team doesn't have so don't blow all of your cash on weapons and equipment.
Some skills you can learn include lock picking, defusing bombs, rewire fuses and tactical demolition. These skills have several levels of difficulty that increase the time it takes to complete if you don't have the matching level of experience. When performing a specific skill in-game, such as lock picking, your mobile device will switch to the task and require you to use the touch screen controls to finish it. You will not be able to rejoin the main mission until your specialized task is complete thereby leaving you vulnerable and dependent on the support of you team..
After your Squad buys Intel, purchases equipment and agrees on a strategy, you'll be dropped into the mission. Your success or failure will be determined by the completion of objectives, combat score, # of penalties your team incurs and time. The Squad with the highest score earns Elite Status Points (ESP). In a mission where one Squad is defending and the other Squad is attacking there will be 2 games played to allow each team to perform both objectives. The winner will be determined by the combined score.
ESP will allow you to upgrade your Safe House and Armory, personalize your weapons and get on The Target Leader Board, which can be posted on your social media page.
It’s an organized group of officials that assist those with influence and money in providing solutions to their problems. In order to meet the demands of their clients, The Company built a network of Mercenary Squads around the world that are willing to provide resolution for the right fee and prestige.
We understand that gamers want to express themselves through their in-game character. That’s why we’ve decided to give you the ability to choose from a variety of male models, various skin tones, an assortment of clothing and accessories to express yourself. If we exceed our stretch goal of $115,000 we’ll start working on a female character with similar options.
The Target includes a unique way for players to manage their character, clothing, specialized skills, equipment and weapons through a customizable Armory that connects to the Safe House. We've included a special feature allowing players in the same Safe House the ability to rent items from their teammates' Armory. This can provide a huge advantage during a mission for the teams that have a bigger selection from which to choose. If there is an item needed to complete an objective, you may find it in your teammate's Armory and rent it at a fraction of the purchase price for a set period of time.
Interactive Safe House
This is where every player lands after setting up their profile and Armory. You’ll have the option to join a public or private match where you’ll start inside your Armory that connects to the Host’s Safe House. Once connected, your Armory door will open, granting you access. The purpose of the Safe House is to provide a secure setting for you and your Squad to receive confidential data (Missions, Objectives and Intel) and time to develop your game plan before entering a mission. There will be other perks like the ability to test weapons at your Shooting Range, and upgrade your Safe House through Elite Status Points that are earned in-game.
Weapons, Equipment and Special Skills
We’re still finalizing the first phase of weapons, equipment and special skills, but wanted to provide you an overview of what is under consideration.
Weapons include a variety of knives, handguns, rifles, shotguns and specialty weapons such as a tranquilizer and/or taser gun that will help complete an objective in mission.
In The Target, lock picking, defusing bombs, and surveillance have skill and equipment-based components. For example, not every lock is created equal. If all you have is a basic pick and come across an advanced lock, expect things to be fairly difficult, yet still possible. If you’re fast enough you might still be able to pull it off, so that’s where the skill comes in.
Special skills, such as lock picking, will switch to a game within a game using touch screen controls to complete the task leaving you blind to what’s going on around you. The quicker you complete the task, the more likely you’ll still be alive (you can always ask a teammate to watch your back).
Missions and Objectives
Office Complex (concept)
The Train Yard is the first of 3 maps that will consist of 1 entry point per side (additional entry points may open up if you but Intel) and a minimum of 2 objectives required to complete a mission, with optional bonus objective which offers maximum Elite Status Points if carried out successfully. The maps will be designed to extend play for 8 to 12 minute sessions while the objectives will force your team to split up, knowing there's risk of running into the other Squad. There will be objectives that have members of each team going to the same area with conflicting orders. This will force you to make a quick decision: sneak around or take the enemy out. We have several ideas for the next 2 maps that require refinement. We will provide updates, so stay connected!
Partnership with Students at
Michigan State University
Greater Play has partnered with two teams of students over the past year to test key game functions in a working prototype for iPad, and create several assets (guns, weapons, buildings and characters). More recently, they've assisted us with developing our first map, adding the Armory and preparing for Kickstarter.
Greater Play has 2 Partners that are graduates of MSU and have taken the Game Design Program. This is why we have complete faith in what students at MSU and other Universities taking Game Design are capable of doing.
We'll be selecting several students that are qualified in Design, Art and Development from the fall session to assist our team with completing our project in the given time period at the highest quality possible.
Our goal will be to hire some of the selected students at MSU as permanent members of our team as we move toward the next phase of The Target.

Project Updates (coming soon)
Risks and challenges
Our biggest challenge is going to be getting backers to trust that an Indie Game Development Company like Greater Play can deliver a complex project like this in the time we've laid out.
Some people might wonder, "Why are you working with students on a project like this?" The answer is relatively simple. Many of the students coming out of MSU's Game Design and Development Specialization are industry bound. We'd like to keep some of them here in East Lansing working to build a community of independent game developers in the area. Do they have as much experience as some grizzled industry veteran? No, but they have access to the kind of support and guidance that the top-rated program offers. Plus, students from this program are already working with other local companies, releasing such iOS games like:
* Freaky Deaky Flashback
* Grumpy Snowmen
* Feather Feud
* Spartan Villa
The students will work hand-in-hand with the professional team at Greater Play to ensure a quality release that is delivered on time.
We feel confident that with the Greater Play Team and having 30+ students at MSU taking Game Design to choose from will provide us with all the additional labor needed to deliver one kick ass game.
