What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

About

Online Shopping & Package Theft

The internet is an amazing thing. Anyone with access to a computer or mobile device and a credit card can make purchases with the push of a button. With the evolution of eCommerce, online shopping has reached an all-time high. Think of all the time and money you save by choosing to shop online instead of drive to several different stores to find the right thing. The other benefit of online shopping is that a courier delivers your order right to your front door. Now some people see an opportunity in that. Criminals realize there is nothing to stop them from snatching your package off your doorstep. In fact, in 2016 alone, 11 Million US homeowners reported package theft.

If the buyer is not home during the time of delivery, couriers exercise their better judgement in what is called "safe drop." This technique is far from what the name implies. "Safe drop" is essentially the courier's best attempt at hiding your package on your porch from passersby (e.g. behind posts, benches, etc.)

Millions of items are purchased each and every day through Amazon and other online retailers, but thousands of people end up complaining that their shipment never arrived. Often the case is that somebody has already swiped the package from the porch before the homeowner can retrieve it.

What is a PakGuard?

PakGuard is the safe and most affordable way to ensure your package remains on your porch until you are able to retrieve it. PakGuard will change the way you shop online, as it will significantly reduce the likelihood of a porch pirate running off with your long-awaited package. The PakGuard is designed to give anyone not in possession of the keys a difficult time

Why do you need a PakGuard?

Porch pirates follow delivery drivers around their routes in hopes to steal packages that were delivered but not received by the homeowner, referred to as a "Safe Drop." Having a PakGuard eliminates the opportunity for a quick and easy theft, especially when porch pirates are have to act quickly in order to tail the driver to the next delivery.

1) 53% of global internet users have made an online purchase in 2016

2) Parents spend 61% more online than non-parents

3) Cyber Monday 2016 sales in US accumulated to $2.67B US

How does PakGuard work?

PakGuard arrives at your door as a collapsible bin that easily pops open for quick set-up and take-down. Inside PakGuard you will find two push locks with keys, industrial velcro straps, screws/glue, and an instruction decal (to be placed on door) for the courier to follow. When you are expecting a package, all you must do to set-up your PakGuard is fasten PakGuard to your porch (using the industrial glue, and industrial Velcro straps provided) and the courier takes care of the rest. The courier sees the door decal which indicates you have a PakGuard and the 4 step instructions to ensure your package goes beyond your front door.

Risks and challenges

A risk of the PakGuard is that it is not indestructible. If a porch pirate were to come with the right set of tools or use enough force they could withdraw the package within. In response to this, we believe that a porch pirate is not willing to risk getting caught which may attract attention from neighbours. Additionally, most porch pirates tend to follow delivery drivers around, therefore if they spend too much time at a house that uses PakGuard, they may not be able to keep up with the courier.

What started as a challenge was how we would service apartment dwellers, since they may have restrictions on what they can and cannot install outside their door. We also understand that gluing or screwing a box into the hallway of your apartment complex is against tenant rules. Therefore, we developed a "PakGuard Anchor" which hooks under the door, and is screwed into the bottom of the box. This way no one can run off with the box and it can be removed without hassle.
