About

 The Story

A superhero story about a telekinetic superhero known as "Neuron" who gains telekinetic powers following an emergency brain surgery. His alter ego is Henry Lawrence, an officer in the United States Air Force whose flying career was cut short following a devastating crash caused by chronic headaches and vision problems. Henry is now an Air Force "JAG", or Judge Advocate General, but he longs for the day that he can return to the skies. One day, Henry reports to his office at Walter Rotnache Air Force Base in Carrizozo, New Mexico and collapses from an intense headache. He is rushed to a nearby hospital and mysterious mass is discovered in his brain.

Following surgery to remove the unidentified mass in his brain, Henry returns home and quickly discovers his new telekinetic powers. Henry, encouraged by his friend Joe, decides to fight crime as Neuron. While fighting against a cartel in Juarez, Neuron first crosses paths with the cryptic organization known as the Leviathan Society. Their leader, known only as "Chernobog" seeks to use science to unlock the "true potential" of all mankind and understand the scientific causes of superpowers.

While in Juarez, Neuron also meets a witch named Magda, who has fought against the Leviathan Society for the past several years.

Despite their differences, Magda and Neuron agree to become partners in order to stop the Leviathan Society.

The Story Behind the Comic

Neuron was conceived by me, Matthew Culley, after my personal experience with a birth defect known as a "Rathke's Cleft Cyst". On April 15th, 2017 I was hospitalized with extreme headaches, visual disturbances, and nausea, and following an MRI, I was taken in for emergency brain surgery. The cyst recurred later that year in August, which required a second surgery and a chemo treatment. This experience has profoundly changed my life for the better and it was the primary inspiration for this comic. Since my surgeries I have, in some ways, felt like a true "super human" compared to my entire life beforehand.

Issue one began development in July of this year and was greatly accelerated with the help of an extremely capable and talented artist by the name of Delacy-James Foster. Below you will see examples of the how some of the pages developed over time.

The People Behind the Comic

Writer/Creator: My name is Matthew John-Lawrence Culley, I am a Colorado native and lifelong comic book nerd! I first became interested in comic books as a kid when I was given a set of old Metal Men comics by my aunt. From there I branched out and began reading Teen Titans, JSA, Green Lantern, Batman, Batman Beyond, and all sorts of other superhero comics.

Lead Artist: My name is Delacey-James Foster, an experienced artist. I was born in the beautiful countryside of Kent, known as “The Garden of England” located near London. I grew up with a keen interest in storytelling. This interest fueled my passion to become an artist and bring stories to life! Neuron is one such story and with your help, lets see where this story takes us!

What Will the Money Go Towards?

The funding for this Kickstarter will primarily be paying for the artwork for issue 2, as well as physical print runs of issues 1 and 2. There are also Kickstarter fees and reward related expenditures. We are hoping to have the digital version of issue one up on Comixology by February, and issue two will be available digitally by April. Issue one will be available physically by April, and issue two will be available physically when all rewards will also be shipped out in mid May.

Stretch Goals

Finally, we have stretch goals! With your help we would love to be able to continue the story of Neuron past these initial two issues as well as get as many copies into the hands of our fans as possible! We would also love to do a limited edition hardcover version that contains the first two issues and an alternate cover!

Risks and challenges

We are hoping to decrease printing costs as much as possible so that we will be able to get our rewards in our backers hands in as timely a manner as possible. We do not anticipate any delays, however we will be in constant communication with our backers in the event that there is a delay involving either the comic itself, or the various rewards.
