EXORCISTIC: A ROCK MUSICAL PARODY OF.... THE EXORCIST
When a cash-strapped theatre company decides to capitalize on the 40th Anniversary of the theatrical release of “the Exorcist” with a parody rock opera, they unleash Hell.
Hot on the heels of last years award-winning “Doomsday Cabaret,” the Orgasmico Theatre Company returned to the Fringe with the premiere of their rock parody of “The Exorcist” known by many to be “The Scariest Film of All Time”
For a film that came out 40 years ago (On June 19th, 1973 was its NYC premiere according to IMDB) it’s influence on cinema is unquestionable: EMILY ROSE, LAST EXORCISM, THE RITE…the list of ripoffs goes on and on. Also there are the iconic images: the levitation, spiderwalking, the girl stabbing herself with a crucifix…and of course, the split pea soup.
“Let Jesus F%#@! You!” All these classic quotables of cinematic history make it into this parody with music is that is PURE ROCK (in the 70s style of Ozzy, Bowie, Iggy, Santana, the Carpenters, Creedence and Partridge Family) and depicts the often absurd dichotomy of Good vs Evil, electric guitars summoning the demons who root in man’s dark corners and sneer in the face of God…
But that’s all hooey, right? No one really believes that demons exist anymore, do they?
Among the chief doubters is the Orgasmico Theatre Company, who’s players (in this play-within-a-play) refuse to believe that “evil” really exist in the modern world. Instead, they dissect its cultural relevance, its controversial themes, the 1970s mentality/morality and put it all into a big blasphemous intellectual “experiment” that allows them to break the fourth wall and engage the audience.
…But at what cost? The dangerous thing about live theatre is that if evil really does exist, THEN NO ONE IS SAFE.
For all you fanatics out there, pick up a glow in the dark crucifix and say your prayers: your Salvation may depend on it!
Some of the elements that make our musical so unique include:
- The excitement and energy of a live band
- Wireless Head mics so that the actors can fully move to their greatest potential.
- Lighting, sound, and technical operations that create the mood of the show.
- Great Director, Actors, and Singers that dedicate their time and passion to the project.
- An awesome venue!
The Cost is great but the creative pay off is high. Our goal is to keep growing Exorcistic " A Rock Musical Parody Experiment".
From the words of our writer Michael Shaw Fisher we hope to one day really say " What theater is this? The Pantages Baby, We Made It!"
YOU ALL ROCK!!! We made our goal to cover half the costs to put this beast up on stage again... it ain't over yet. Our Stretch Goal is important for us to be able to keep this show going after this run and evolve into a show that may get the chance to be seen by audiences all over the country. $3,600 is our current STRETCH GOAL...
We are aiming to break our Stretch Goal to purchase 7 Wireless Mics and Receivers to avoid having to rent lower quality mics in the future which is where the majority of our current budget is going this time around.
We need 7 mics which total at $2100.00. This is a definite goal for our continued future with the show.
We also hope to one day cut a cast album for all to enjoy:) That is a dream goal which may require successful ticket sales on this production run or future runs to afford. We hope Kickstarter is a last effort in the future. But who knows... maybe a pre-sale reward of the Cast Recording is all we will put out as a reward to make sure it happens.
$3,600 - (Wireless Mics) ALL BACKERS will get a Buy 1 get 1 Free coupon for our next stage production of EXORCISTIC after the Sacred Fools run. We will only get better... yes even you $1 Backers (est delivery 6/15/14)
$7,500 - (Cast Recording) ALL BACKERS will receive a digital download of the Cast Recording. (est delivery 6/15/14)

“Always delivered with delicious gusto…As with the classic rock-style score and entertaining lyrics, there isn’t a false note among the cast, but Laura Sperrazza is particularly, gruesomely brilliant as demonic little Megan.”
“Although I have never seen the movie The Exorcist, I had no trouble following the story and the way the company approached it. It came across perfectly. It was the perfect parody of a movie that changed Hollywood, and a fitting tribute to the 40th anniversary of the film coming up on June 19. Don’t miss this show”

The first leg of this show was produced with the HOLLYWOOD FRINGE FESTIVAL as we mentioned above. The Fringe offers productions and small theatre companies the opportunity to put up a show in established Los Angeles Theatre venues at a fraction of the normal cost and it almost guarantees a decent audience from a swell of theatre goers just for the festival.
So let me first state that we are considered to be amongst the few to be extended by the BEST OF FRINGE committee which is hosted at Theatre Asylum, Lounge, Complex to just name a few... which none have the space we need for this massive show and cast. So if we get this space during this month it will be listed among that list of productions honored with the title of being in the BEST OF FRINGE.
It was produced by our Artistic Director solely from his own pocket and some of his family members. He did not receive the tickets sales from the previous run before we decided to pick this show up ourselves and keep the show running for a second wave in the BEST OF FRINGE before changes to the show, during this evolution that all musicals go through, take place.
Where your donations are going...
We have an awesome opportunity to put this show up for 4 encore performances at THE SACRED FOOLS THEATER COMPANY as a curated selection for the Sacred Fools Spotlight series Thursdays at 9:00pm on July 25th, August 1st, 8th and 15th 2013. Yet we are short funds we need (that we are putting in ourselves) to completely cover the cost of the Band, Theatre Rental, Insurance, Union Actors, Spot Operator, Stage Manager, Light Board Operator, Stagehands, Mic and Equipment Rental.
Our current budget is over $3,000 but we need some advanced help from you to cover half that cost. We have the first half covered that we hope to break even after ticket sales and the other half is where your donations are going.
Our Kickstarter Goal is set to where it is just to cover the basics.... the STRETCH GOAL is aimed for the longevity and longer life of this show we hope and expect to need to be in a better position to produce this show for a 3rd and 4th time after the changes we expect to happen soon.
to name a few...
ALSO NOTE: Whoever donates the most will be crowned PAZUZU THE BABALONIAN KING OF THE WIND DEMONS! And gets their picture among the cast on the website, the program (current highest donor will be posted), cast album insert (if and when it is recorded and printed).

Risks and challenges
The new musical today is not an easy art form to keep alive. The reason being, that the overhead is so high to produce these musicals, young writers and artists like ourselves fear the risk of an equal return on payment.
We are putting $3,200.00 of our money into this project and with this we are able to produce 4 Thursday shows at Sacred Fools Theater LA on July 25, Aug 1, Aug 8, and Aug 15.
One of our biggest challenges and costs lie in Mic Rentals. If we do well, we hope to buy our own mics and continue the production at a more reasonable cost.
So we are doing this Kickstarter to cover half of the cost and we hope that tickets sell enough to cover the half coming directly out of our pockets. If the show is a success we hope to profit enough to afford to cut a cast album so that the world may know that this show is out there ready to hit their town.
There is always the possible set back when dealing with Live Theater but as they say in the theater. "The Show Must Go On" and that is exactly what we are trying to do.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
