Fatal Flash is a Competitive, 2D Online Mutliplayer Brawler that features lightning-paced, movement-heavy combat, numerous Archetypes ('Champions') with hundreds of customization options, and varied game modes and objectives - all rendered in hand-drawn, steampunk-inspired pixel art.

Fatal Flash was first conceived from an oxymoronic love of both the chaotic action and split-second decision making of fighting/shooter games, as well as the slower, but creatively-charged and customization-heavy metagame present in CCGs/MOBAs. While there have certainly been excellent titles exploring the synergy of these two elements before, we at Single "A" Productions have always wanted just a little more, and that is why we've decided to bring Fatal Flash to life - to take the idea to its fullest limits and endeavor to create an unique and exciting experience for all.

Just a year ago, Fatal Flash was nothing more than an idea; with the irreplaceable help of so many talented creators and friends from around the world, we've transformed that idea into a near-alpha stage game, with many major systems already in place and ready for additional assets and polish. We are running this Kickstarter now, in the hopes of receiving enough funding to take the game into Early Access, as well as reach out to our community for valuable advice, direction, and feedback.

Playable Demo

We are happy to present a demo build of Fatal Flash we've been working on for you to experience first hand. The demo features 6 Archetypes (outfitted with some customization options), 2 Elimination-based modes (FFA and Team), and online compatibility, meaning you can play with anyone around the world!

Kindly note that it can be difficult to find open games with strangers due to the demo not being widely distributed; as such, we highly encourage playing with friends if possible! The World:

The Continent of Ziakhvalle has always been on the brink of all-out war. The most powerful nation, Akrea, have long set their eyes on foreign territory and resources, and would have invaded long ago if not for the alliance known as the Union Against Belligerent Interests (UABI), which unites many sovereign states together in agreement to collectively fight Akrea, should they ever break the peace.

This stalemate which had long obstructed the break out of war collapsed when one day, a catastrophic meteor shower, now known as The Starless Nights, rained destruction upon Ziakhvalle. Millions of lives came to an abrupt end, while the entire continent was engulfed in complete darkness. Nearly a year later, when light finally returned to the land, a mysterious, sky-blue element was discovered within the meteorites in copious amounts.

The element would come to be known as Azurium. Preliminary experimentation revealed its incredible re-combinatory potential, and it wasn’t long before Akrea was able to weaponize the element, and arm soldiers in mass with the ability to instantly teleport great distances. Without a moment wasted, Akrea began their full scale invasion, eliminating many factions before they were able to muster any meaningful resistance. With options waning, the UABI had no choice but to research Azurium themselves, developing their own technologies in an attempt to combat the impending Akrean legions.

As tensions between Akrea and the UABI continued to escalate, reports began to spread about sightings of “shadowy beings” surfacing all across Ziakhvalle. The exact origin and purpose of these creatures are the subject of much speculation, but what is undeniable is their overwhelming numbers, unholy strength, and seemingly insatiable desire for death and destruction.

With unending chaos and carnage all but inevitable, only those able to grasp the mysteries of Azurium will have a chance to emerge from the darkness to come.

The Archetypes:

In Fatal Flash, you do not control heroes or legends. Instead, each Archetype is simply a template - a canvas with broadly defined strokes waiting for players to fill in the rest. From changing an Archetype's appearance and name, to replacing their skills and in extreme cases entirely changing play-styles, players will be granted full reign over the creation of their own unique Archetype, with whom they can go on to create their own legends and achievements.

Each Archetype starts with 6 skills by default, and will always have access to 4 universal skills - basic attack, block, movement, and ultimate (though there exists noticeable nuances from Archetype to Archetype). The remaining two skills embody a unique mechanic specific to that Archetype, and help set it apart from the others.

All skills function on a cooldown system, with the exception of the ultimate, which is charged over time, as well as through dealing damage.

Players choose an archetype and are placed into teams of up to 3 players, whereupon they must work together to complete the various objectives (ranging from delivering a payload to classic deathmatch) provided by the chosen game mode.

In addition to fending off opposing Archetypes and completing objectives, players will discover several environmental elements that can both help and hinder their efforts.

For example, Healing Stations generate essential health recovery which can easily turn the tide of a battle.

Flame Traps can be activated to grant your opponents (or allies) a swift, brutal death, or be used tactically to deny valuable space.

Last but not least, when a round timer depletes, the game enters Sudden Death, and a damaging force field begins moving in, shrinking the play space and forcing player confrontation.

Game Modes

With base funding, we can focus on perfecting the two core modes of the game. The first is Classic Elimination (FFA and Team), in which the primary aim is to claim as many lives as possible in a given time frame.

The second is the objective-based Core Collection mode, in which two teams must gather and deliver precious Azurium Cores to their base, whist preventing opponents from doing the same. When carried, Cores will drastically reduce mobility and skill-usage, but simultaneously increase Archetype lethality.

There will be minimum of 2 distinct maps released for each mode, and with more support from the community, we would look into the creation of further interesting modes:

  • More Objective-Based Modes (Payload, Capture Points)
  • PvE Boss Raid with players banding together to take down terrifying, AI controlled bosses
  • Teleport Racing where players utilize their skills to either disrupt or get ahead of opponents, and be the first to reach the end!

Visual Customization

The primary visual customization comes in the form of Archetype skins; each skin will be separated into three distinct body parts. For example, the S.H.I.E.L.D is split into Arm - Head & Torso - Legs. Each part is interchangeable, so you can combine and graft different parts from different skins however you like! Skins are purely cosmetic in nature, with no impact on core gameplay.

Trait Customization

We understand that a large appeal of the "Class-Based" genre comes  from player attachment towards one or more characters. As such, each Archetype is designed with a unique style in mind, to help separate them from the others and appeal to different players. As examples, the Nightmare utilizes knockbacks and roots to crowd control and bully opponents, the Astralmancer relies on map-spanning range to eliminate opposition from afar, and the Akrean Piercer is reflexes personified - relying solely on speed and precision to gain value.

However, we also realize that there are simply too many players out there, and that it is not realistic to try and satisfy everyone with singular Archetype designs alone. That is why we have created the Traits System, a card-based modification platform that allows you to do anything from simply tweaking the stats of an Archetype, to changing the way a skill functions (or just flat out replacing it). With a maximum of three slots per loadout, and tens of hundreds of Traits at your disposal, you are given free reign to experiment and to create your own unique Archetypes and strategies.

Take for example, The Akrean Sky-Splitter's "Split Arrow" skill, which by default fires one large projectile that can split into 5 smaller projectiles.

"That's not enough arrows for me" - you might think.  Well, add the "Blot Out The Sun" Trait, and you now have 10 split arrows on contact.

Still not enough arrows? Throw on the "Fully Loaded" Trait to have two simultaneous charges of Split Arrow, for 20 total split arrows.

From the beginning of development, we have always envisioned Fatal Flash as a Free To Play title. We believe that a multiplayer game lives and dies by it’s player base, so for this reason, as well as the fact that Fatal Flash is our first large project, we wanted to provide an environment where all players can give the game a try, without being turned away by a price tag.

However, with Free To Play inevitably comes the issue of monetization, and we understand there will be worries of randomization and loot drops given our focus on customization and player choice. However, we want to assure you we have no plans to utilize a random rewards system, and will commit to a pay-upfront model, similar to that of Awesomenauts or Warframe. What this means is, all purchasable items, be it Traits or Cosmetic, will be directly unlocked through a one-time purchase.

Additionally, all Traits will be unlockable simply through playing the game and earning Azurite Shards - the only currency present in Fatal Flash. Most Cosmetic items can also be unlocked through Shards, with the exception of newly released items (which will be purchase-only for a limited period before becoming unlockable), and a few legendary cosmetic items (to maintain exclusivity for those who do choose to support the longevity of the game).

Even though we have a plan in place, and believe it is the right direction for the game, we realize that when it comes down to it, not everything may go as smoothly as we hope. As such, we are expecting, and very eager to work with our community throughout the full development cycle of the game - to ensure that the final game is one that will make you feel rewarded for your progress, but also one that can thrive and grow off its community.

As mentioned, our team strongly believes that no game can be truly great without an awesome community behind it, and as such we are really excited to bring you Fatal Flash so early in it's development cycle. We really look forward to all your invaluable feedback and suggestions, and will do our utmost to implement all the best ideas into the product, so that it can become not only a game by us, but also one by all of you.

In order to support the community and help it grow, we hope to set up discussion forums for suggestions, as well as identify super backers early on, to invite them to playtest alpha-builds, as well as chat with the us and help shape the direction of the game. Once things start to kick off, we also want to set up weekly polls and even occasional design/art contests to give everyone a chance to contribute.

Michael Ren is the Lead Designer and Producer of Fatal Flash. He also "helps" with programming, but typically causes more bugs than he fixes.  He graduated from NYU Tisch in 2016 with a double major in Film and Game Design, and is now committed to making Fatal Flash a reality as CEO of Single "A" Productions.

Camilo Arturo (@Conzeit) is the Lead Pixel Artist for Fatal Flash, and is responsible for helping Fatal Flash and its many Archetypes come to life. As good as he is at illustrating characters however, he just can't seem to catch a break when it comes to actually playing them. His previous works include Death Road To Canada, Ruin of the Reckless, and the upcoming Wargroove.

Bruno Reis-Gallando is the Lead Programmer of Fatal Flash. He is our resident "Computer Wizard", and when not busy keeping things functioning in FF, he studies Computer Science in Brazil. He also loves stabbing people in the back with the Assassin.

Arcade Hero (@arcadehero) supports Camilo in the creation of additional pixel assets. He is a pixel addicted creature with 3 years of experience, looking to change peoples' attitude towards pixel art in a positive way.

Vincent Van-hoof (@Vincent_VanHoof) is the Lead Concept Artist for Fatal Flash. With over 7 years of concept and illustration experience, Vincent puts all of his effort into ensuring players will have visually interesting characters to brawl with. His previous works include Dreary Hamlet, Islands of Nyne Battle Royale, and The Traveller Card Game.

Philip Spann (www.spannsounds.com) is the Lead Composer for Fatal Flash. He claims the music of Final Fantasy was responsible for his interest in music production and grew up on JRPG soundtracks. He produced hip hop at Austin's Spitshine Studios before moving to LA to work as an audio editor and composer.

  Kasrah Ghobadi (@theStaticMan) serves as the PR Manager on Fatal Flash. When he's not organizing play-tests or marketing the game, he studies Game Design and Philosophy at NYU, and is also an avid reader, writer, and developer.

David Logan (http://www.akuparagames.com) is our Marketing/Kickstarter Consultant. As CEO of Akupara Games, he combines a decade of experience in game development and marketing on projects ranging from indie to major studios. Risks and challenges

Our team is an incredibly diverse one, with members covering all parts of the globe (we represent over 6 different time zones!), and towards the beginning, communication was certainly not the most efficient.

However, after almost a year of working together, understanding each others' schedules and habits, but more importantly setting specific meeting times and deadlines (as well as sticking to them), we've grown into a much more efficient and mature team, and are confident we can deliver on our promises - both on time and up to standards.
