What is Kingdom of Skulls?
Kingdom of Skulls is a 36 page black & white comic written, illustrated and lettered by myself, Ray Wegner. It follows the story of an ancient artifact known as the Skull Crown. You will learn how it came to be and follow its journey as it is passed down through countless generations to many different and unique bearers.
The book is comprised of 3 separate stories-
Kingdom of Skulls
This story was originally published in serialized form in the pages of King Bone Presents, an anthology series from King Bone Press. KBPresents was a digital only release, with only the first issue seeing print as a special release for ICE (Indie Comix Expo) in April of 2015. The story serves as an introduction to the world that KoS takes place in, following an old King as he prepares to defend his Kingdom in battle. It also contains a short origin of The First King, and how the Skull Crown came to be.
This short story was created as a special project for Inktober 2016. I created one panel of the story each day for the month of October and posted it to my various social media accounts. It follows yet another king who is trying to solve the mystery of an unknown force causing the people of his Kingdom to suddenly die. This was very much intended to be a love to letter to the work of Mike Mignola and his many fantastic Hellboy short stories. I drew this story in a different style than what I normally do, hoping to reflect that inspiration.
Bloodlines is a brand new 8 page story meant to go hand in hand with the original KoS story. It's meant to flesh out the world a bit more, giving proper names to the Kings and the Kingdom, as well as a bit more history on the travels of the Skull Crown.
I am very fortunate to have some supremely talented friends, and I have brought 3 of them on board to spice up the book with some pinup art! Ryan Lee and Mike Jackson are both incredible artists. They were among the first people I really connected with online when I started getting serious about making comics several years ago. They've both been incredibly supportive and I own several pieces of art from each of them. Bobgar Ornelas is one of the founders of King Bone Press, and is a fantastic artist and comic creator. I've become good friends with him over the years, and he did an amazing Kingdom of Skulls themed cover for KBPresents #2 which will be included as a pinup as well! I'm honored to have all of these guys grace the pages of KoS!
Kingdom of Skulls is being published by my amazing friends at King Bone Press, an awesome indie publisher that has been putting out great comics for many years. I'm running this campaign to help fund the initial print run of the book, while the guys at KBP will be helping me with promotion, production, publishing on digital platforms and getting the book into as many people's hands as possible. They have run several successful Kickstarter campaigns themselves, and I'm extremely grateful to have them helping me through this process!
How does Kickstarter work?
If this is your first time backing a project, I'll break it down for you as simple as possible-
- You make a pledge to the campaign, and in return I agree to send you some awesome stuff
- You will only be charged for your pledge if the project has hit its goal at the end of the campaign
- If the project does not reach its goal, you will not be charged, and I won't be able to send you any awesome stuff
I am currently putting the finishing touches on the book and getting everything ready for printing. If the campaign is successful, I will be sending the print ready files off to the printer as soon as I receive the funds from Kickstarter. As soon as the books come in, we'll be stuffing envelopes and getting them out to you as fast as we can. I'm expecting to have all of the books out to backers by the end of November, with the exception of those who pledge for commissions, which will take a little longer. The comic will be released digitally on the KBP site the Wednesday after the campaign ends, and should be on comiXology around the same time.
There are lots of cool rewards available! Most importantly is the comic itself. The book will be 36 interior pages, standard comic size, printed on high quality paper with a cardstock cover. A DRM free digital version is also available.
The 2014 & 2015 Kingdom of Skulls sketchbooks are digest sized, convention style art books. They feature sketches, commissions and comic work I did over those years. Each book is 24 pages, printed on high quality paper with a cardstock cover. Physical versions of this reward are very limited, but digital versions are available as well.
I will be producing an original 8.5x11 art print exclusive to this Kickstarter campaign. This will be printed on heavy, high quality stock, signed & numbered and limited to the number of backers who pledge at those reward levels.
I'm also offering 6x9 inked Skull King sketches and 9x12 inked head/bust commissions of your choice of character. These will be produced once the campaign is funded. These reward levels are currently limited, but I may open more slots if there is high demand.
I have some really cool ideas in mind for stretch goal rewards as well, so the sooner the project gets funded, the sooner you can find out what those are!
Thank you so much for checking out this project! This is something that I've been working on for a few years and I'm really excited to finally have it ready to go. Making comics is something I've been passionate about for a long time, and this is the culmination of a lot of hard work and preparation. Hopefully we can get this project funded and get the book out into your hands soon!
Risks and challenges
The biggest risks involved with this campaign are printing and/or shipping delays. I'm working with reputable printers who have a fast turnaround time and am prepared to begin prepping books for shipment as soon as I receive them. I promise to be completely transparent throughout the printing and shipping process, and if there are unexpected delays for any reason, Kickstarter backers will be the first to know.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
