A twenty-first century love story about one man's quest to find a woman who likes gingers.

UPDATE

We reached our goal of $10,000 halfway into the campaign, and I have to tell you I'm still a little overwhelmed.  I now know that I'm going to be able to finish the film, and I can't tell you how good that feels.  But the campaign isn't over yet.  Kickstarter will keep it open the full 30 days, so anyone can donate up to the 27th of September.  And any extra money will just go into the film (festival applications, promoting the film, extra hard drives to protect against disaster, etc.)  So I'm setting two new goals.  I want to show broadcasters and film festivals that there is an audience for this film, and the best way to do that is to show interest from the wider public.  At present 231 people have backed this project.  I want to see if we can get that number to 1,000.  It doesn't matter if you only give a single $1 (which is about £0.63), I've reached my financial goal, I just want to be able to show that there is an audience.

My other goal is to see if we can double my original ambition and hit $20,000.  (I'm still hoping someone is going to jump at my $1,000 reward to get a date with me, because that would make an amazing scene in the film.)

If we hit either of those goals, I'll release a new clip on YouTube that I otherwise plan to save for the film.

The Beginning

I've always wanted to make a film about my hair.  I know, it sounds crazy, and everyone laughs at me when I say it, but little things happen all the time and I've always known that there was a funny story in it.  The problem was that I didn't want to just rant about how people tease me.  Then one night, almost two years ago, I was chatting with some friends, and I realized that people are always telling me that they have this friend who just loves guys with red hair.  But it's always their friend.  In my entire life I'd never actually met a woman who had a thing for gingers.  So I decided I'd start looking for one.  And Being Ginger was born.  In my last six weeks of graduate school I made a 24 minute long documentary.  It was the hit of the degree show and it won the 2012 Creative Scotland Student Media Award for best documentary.  So I decided to keep working on it and turn it into a feature film (70-75 minutes).

I should also say that Being Ginger is not just about my hair.  It's about modern dating and the insecurities that we all face.  (Only my insecurity is pretty much universally considered funny for some reason.  All you have to do is call me ginger, and someone will laugh.)  The fact is, it seems like every week I meet someone who'll say something crazy without realizing there's anything wrong with it.  For example, take a look at this deleted scene:

(I should explain why this scene was deleted.  First, that's a real woman, and the interview with her lasted 25 minutes.  So the two minutes that are the most important are in the film, and this is what I was sadly unable to keep.  If that tells you anything about what made the cut.)

The Middle

So in the year since I've graduated I've expanded the film.  I currently have a 50 minute rough cut and I am getting ready to shoot the last big sequence.

Every year thousands of redheads from around the world descend on a small city in The Netherlands for the world's biggest redhead festival.  It is not a film festival.  It is simply a weekend long celebration of redheadedness.  This year, my original short film will play at the opening night event.  I am also going with my camera woman to shoot the epic conclusion to the feature film (while surrounded by thousands of redheads, and more importantly, several thousand "lovers and supporters of redheads.")

Which makes me wonder if I'll meet someone like the fan who sent me this letter:

The End

I am spending every penny I have on this trip, and when I get back I am going to be unable to edit the film, which is why I'm here asking for help.  With the $10,000 that I am asking for I will be able to put the film through post-production, which means hiring an editor, a sound editor, hard drives, color correction, everything.  It will also let me spend all of my energy focused on making the best possible film, instead of having to take random odd jobs to support myself.  My hope is to have the film finished and released online by November 20th, which is "Hug A Ginger Day."  If I don't raise the $10,000 I'll have to go on working odds jobs and it will take me at least another year to finish.

This is a 30 day campaign, and it is my hope that I can find 1,000 people who are willing to say, "I want to see this film, here's $10."  In return they will each receive an HD digital download as soon as the film is finished.  (And of course there are other levels of donation in case you really want to get involved.)

This is also an all or nothing campaign, which means I only receive the money if I reach my goal.  The money you donate will only leave your account once I make it to $10,000.  If I fall short by even a dollar, I get nothing.

I understand that times are tough for most of us, so if you can't afford even a dollar donation, please at least share this page and my website with your friends.  I have a channel on YouTube with a few funny videos related to the film and I just want to share them with as many people as possible.  The film has a Facebook page and a Twitter account, so there are lots of ways to get involved.  If you just want to know when the film is released, it's best to sign up for the newsletter on my website.
