Final Prototype
Final Prototype

The Mini Mover is a 3D printed modular miniature figure holding system developed by us over the course of the last 6 months. The Mini Mover came about after clumsily rushing from one gaming table to the next and spilling around 100 miniatures on the floor, some of which broke and most had paint or base damage.

The Mini Mover allows you to quickly place your miniatures from the tray onto the gaming table or quickly pack them away to travel or to move to another gaming table at a tournament. The system is arguably quicker to use than foam based cases on the market since you do not need to worry about horns, spikes, lances, guns or other bits getting caught on the foam upon insertion or removal.

The basic trays originally worked like movement trays, and offered an organisational advantage at home, at the gaming club or tournament. You can "plate up" your infantry while batch painting or writing army lists.

We are currently using rubber bands to hold the trays closed which works well, but is not elegant, so we will use the Kickstarter funds to purchase extension springs in bulk to add to the units to make them more professional and more functional, as seen in the final prototype above.

Obviously, the more components we buy, the better price we can get for them. Even buying a box of 100 screws is around the same price as buying 20 loose screws. I realised the economy of scale a long time ago. We will purchase stainless steel cap head socket screws, washers, nylock nuts and brass heat set inserts, as tapped plastic can wear quickly. This added additional expense but increased build quality.

If we hit the relevant stretch goal, we will implement a method of linking the Mini Movers together for transport.  This will probably include a male/female dovetail and camlock component.

This is a basic tray. Great for organisation, painting, movement trays. Also the first design iteration. I wanted a mechanical method of holding the models in.  These are still great for organisation of models at home, but not ideal for transport.

This is a basic sideways slider.  It didn't quite work, but I knew I was onto something, so I kept persisting.

Split slider with bevels.  This was the point I knew that the design was worth pursuing as it saved me from dropping my miniatures at a friendly game. I realised that you could hold them upside down and shake them around and that they were so quick to load and unload.

New design and larger capacity.  I wanted to set about making a design that could fit more miniatures in. This was the result. It has 2 sliding pieces and is just as quick to load and unload the minis. I realised that it needed a thicker base to accommodate fasteners, and tabs to open and springs to hold it closed.  It was complicated.

Second to Last Design. This version has the tabs, inserts for nuts on the rear and springs (rubber bands in this case). The final design has thicker parts to prevent bending and holes for the springs to thread through. It also has tabs to pull the sections open.  I realised that the design was still complicated, and set about simplifying it.

Current design.  We went back to 10x miniatures for sake of simplicity.  We changed to a sliding bevel which reduced the part count and made it much more polished.  We added a cam lever mechanism to hold the Mini Mover open while you load and unload your miniatures.  We added thermal inserts so that we are not relying on threads tapped into plastic for durability and replaced the rubber bands with extension springs.  This was a huge leap in quality and it was at this point that we decided to launch the Kickstarter to make the Miniature Mover available to the public.

The design is complete and has gone through several variations and prototype stages. We will use the funds to purchase 3D printing materials and fasteners.  If the demand is sufficient, we have a line of credit that we can use to purchase additional 3D printers so that we are able to stick to our deadline. We currently have 2 FDM printers and 1 SLA resin printer.

We have a machinist on standby should we need to replace any of the plastic components with metal. Our suppliers of plastic filament, stainless steel fasteners and brass heat set inserts are Australian like us, and are highly reliable. We are using socket head cap screws for a more professional look and thermal set brass inserts to prevent screws from pulling out of the plastic.

  • $3500- Choice of 25 Colours - Grey, White, Black, Green, Red, Orange, Purple, Pink, Yellow, Skin, Brown, Dark Green, Gold, Silver, Pastel Blue, Pastel Green, Pastel Yellow, Translucent, Translucent Blue, Translucent Green, Translucent Purple, Translucent Red, Translucent Orange, Translucent Yellow.

  • $4000 - 25 x 25mm and 25x 32mm options available for an additional $15 each.  Works out cheaper than buying TWO 10x units.

  • $5000 - Metal Handle instead of 3D printed ones.

  • $6000 - Implement a method for linking the Mini Movers together for transport.  We will probably use male and female dovetails and a camlock mechanism.

When you pledge for the basic tray, please add amounts for additional pledges into your pledge amount. A survey will be sent out at the end of the Kickstarter to get your colour and other accessory preferences.  If we hit the stretch goals you will be able to go back and edit your pledge to change to the larger Mini Mover.

Risks and challenges

The design is complete and has gone through several iterations to get to where we are.

We are relying on machines to create our product in house; this means we have full control over the whole production cycle. Machines can break down, and to address this, we have pre-approval for credit in place to purchase additional 3D printers should any catastrophic failures occur.

Both suppliers of plastic filament and fasteners have agreed and confirmed that bulk supply of materials is easily achieved.

This is our first kickstarter, which brings a slight learning curve, but we have a business mentor and several advisors that can help out should any administrative hiccups occur.
