We are a group of filmmakers aiming to raise £ 1000 to fund our final year documentary. The project, King Doc UK, explores the female take on drag performance, shining a spotlight on the UK's talented drag kings.
Drag Kings are male impersonators, often women, who embody the mannerisms of men. Our documentary will follow a young performing drag king and find out the core reasons that performers choose gender impersonation as a form of artistic expression.
We have already received great interest in the project with an active fan base of over 2,200 people following the film on social media furthering our belief that this documentary needs to be made!
Who are we?
Our team is an eclectic bunch of talented individuals:
The film will be directed by an astonishing young Director Elizabeth-Valentina. Already having one documentary under her belt, Valentina is known for her witty humor, colorful style and ability to uncover amazing stories from her subjects.
Our Finnish Producer Annika is also making her second documentary. With over 3 years of experience in journalism and advertisement, she knows that careful research and attention to detail will make the final product look amazing.
Our Researcher Taliya is leaving no stone unturned as she finds the perfect people and information to make this production successful.
The visuals are in the safe hands of our talented female Director of Photography Hannah. She has worked on both fiction and corporate projects and has the ability to capture everyday events in an extraordinary way.
And last but not least the men on our team... Our Sound Designer Sean will record and design a sound sphere to aurally stimulate our audiences and enhance Hannah's visual record.
Finally our Editor, Christoph, will put everything together ready to show the world.
Why do we need funds?
As students from University of York's The Department of Theatre, Film and Television we have access to industry standard production equipment. Therefore the majority of our budget (60 %) can go towards travel expenses, including crew accommodation and vehicle rentals, to allow us to visit our contributors in their natural environments. We will be shooting the documentary in London as the drag kings scene is dominantly based in the capital.
In the fortunate case of exceeding our target, we will use any additional funds to acquire rights to some amazing music! Performance and music are such a key aspects of the drag that to fully tell the story, we wish to feature the original sounds of the drag world!
In addition King Doc UK has a well-developed marketing strategy to reach an even wider audience! We wish to acquire more marketing material to spread the message of this documentary so that it can travel even further – and become a valued resource both within and outside of the drag community .
By backing up our project, you too can be a part of the King Doc UK community!
We are hosting a fabulous drag night and a networking event in York to celebrate the LGBTQ+ communities and local film making talent! You can donate trough this page and receive a ticket as a reward that will allow you an entrance on Saturday 16th, January in Thomas’s of York for a night of drag performances not to be missed!
For those not in York, please check our other rewards listed on the side! :)
While the film project is still dragging on.... You can follow our progress on social media. When online, you can join the conversation by using the hash tag #kingdocuk !
We really value all of out supporters who contribute to our project, as well as those who simply help by spreading the word.
Risks and challenges
The successful funding of this project is just the beginning of our challenge.
We will be shooting over a 5 day period. Capturing the complex and dynamic world of drag performance in this amount of time will be a challenge but our producer has created a tight framework for us to work around and we intend to stick to it.
Our director will take on an interactive role within our film which will culminate in a performance at the end. This will take a lot of nerve to perform live, as a novice king, in front of an audience.
After production is complete we will face the challenge of getting this film scene by as many people as possible, we want it to become a resource both within and outside of the drag community. We plan to navigate the film festival circuit as efficiently as possible and this requires careful time management and financial planning.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
