The Post Office at Boyes Hot Springs is the heart of the part of Sonoma Valley we call "The Springs." This was a thriving resort community for San Francisco from the 1880s to the1960s, when decline set in. (However, we still boast the Sonoma Mission Inn, a high-end resort). Although the resorts faded away, the community is still strong. The history of the area is long and interesting but not as storied or as well chronicled as that of the town of Sonoma, just next door. To me, this is what makes it worth studying and making art about.
Important in our history are the numerous celebrations, neighborhood parties really, that were held through the years, many of them on the very site of the current Post Office. We, the members of the Springs Community Alliance would like to revive the fiesta tradition starting with the centennial of the post office. In addition, we would like to get people thinking about the future: The area surrounding the Post Office building has been designated in Redevelopment plans as a future public plaza. At the celebration we would like to present some of the proposed designs for this plaza.
The celebration itself has many possibilities. I have designed a commemorative envelope and a special postmark, which will be issued on July 8, 2011. We will have a display of historic photographs inside the post office. We will present, as mentioned, a display of some of the plaza designs. We are working with the offices of Congressman Mike Thompson and Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey to include them in the event.
More ambitiously, we would like to have a real fiesta. Local Mexican dancers and musicians have offered to perform. For this, we would need to close a street for a day, and provide all the services and permits required.
At very least, we will have an open house at the post office on July 8th and 9th, with the photo exhibit, refreshments, commemorative envelopes for sale (at minimal a price), and a hand-out featuring local history, in English and Spanish.
We are soliciting participation from local businesses and individuals, and from you.
Funds will be used for printing, photo enlarging and mounting, publicity, decorations, and printing. Kickstarter backers will provide some of the money, local sponsors the rest.
