We have secured First Street Green for our first FREE Scratchbox event featuring the full wall on August 16 & 17!
We are busy working to develop a prompt for the event and talking to local fabricators to help us build the boxes and base.
Thanks for all the support and continue to help us by donating and sharing our Kickstarter page! With your help we can truly bring Scratchbox to life.
Thank you to everyone that came out to Union Square on Saturday! We will be at Madison Square Park June 24 6-10pm. Come by and check out the Scratchbottles!
The Scratchbox is a canvas for you to record your thoughts, dreams and inspirations alongside friends, family and neighbors - a new and exciting way to capture the vibrancy of a community. In a city as diverse as New York, we see the Scratchbox as an opportunity to collect the stories told by every one of you.
As an object, the Scratchbox is a translucent box lit from within and coated with a special removable paint. You can then scratch this paint away to produce drawings and messages. The more you scratch, the brighter the box shines!
We plan to build 2 Scratchbox walls, each composed of 16 stacked boxes. Currently, we only have one prototype and we need your help to build the other 31 boxes!
With your contribution, we will build the walls, host the first event, and develop the Scratchbox Project to be an ongoing and recurring experience that will be brought to communities throughout New York City.
This first event will be hosted in the Lower East Side of Manhattan in late July. But, we want the Scratchbox Project to be an ongoing and cyclical experience. With your support, we plan to move forward to visit many more neighborhoods and communities within New York City, and potentially other cities as well. Come to see how you can be a part of your neighborhood’s identity through a fun and engaging process!
The Scratchbox began as a temporary installation that was part of the Lowline’s Young Designers Program Exhibition. During the showcase, we were met with an incredible response to the project. From the excitement of the kids to the crafted ideas of the adults, the Scratchbox became equally filled with great energy and creativity.
The accumulation of drawings materialized the conversations happening between individuals, revealing how the Scratchbox was able to bring a community together while documenting current social trends. By the end, we were eager to explore how we could refine the design into an enduring part of the community which would reach a larger audience.

The Scratchbox is now a more compact structure that allows for mobility and accessibility. The new design consists of two 8’ x 8’ walls made up of 16 stacked boxes.
By traveling throughout New York City to host events in many different neighborhoods, the Scratchbox Project will collect your stories and share them with others. With each mark you make, the Scratchbox will grow brighter and brighter, illuminating your neighborhood like a lantern.
Because every event is localized, the Scratchbox will adapt to the culture of each particular neighborhood. Imagine getting to know your neighbors through the messages they leave behind, while helping tell the story of your community with your own voice!
At our first Scratchbox event, a local artist will be invited to help start telling the story of the neighborhood through their drawings. That’s where you come in! Come join us to add, edit, and cultivate the story of your community together. Each Scratchbox event will be photographed and featured on our website, Facebook, Instagram, and Vine, so your voice can be shared with others.
The Scratchbox Project promotes positive values and provides a variety of benefits:
- Naturally encourages community engagement
- Provides an easy yet informative platform for communication
- Unites people regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, or interest
- Embraces everyone's unique point of view and supports creativity
- Strengthens and promotes rich neighborhood culture
By pledging, you will be helping with every part of the Scratchbox Project, from constructing the boxes to setting up the event space. We only use top quality materials that are non-toxic, reclaimed, locally sourced, and child-friendly.
What happens after we reach our goal?
If we surpass our goal, extra funds could mean bigger Scratchboxes and more cities (a Scratchbox pavilion?). The possibilities are endless, and we hope to have the opportunity to explore them!
Also, if we reach $30,000, we'll throw an awesome party for everyone involved in making the Scratchbox a reality, featuring a prototype for the next generation of Scratchbox (Scratchbox 2.0!)

Risks and challenges
Due to the scale of the project and the number of people who will be interacting with it, safety is of the utmost importance. More effort has been put into designing a structural system that will ensure the Scratchbox is able to withstand tons of people having fun drawing on the walls.
Each Scratch Box is fabricated by a professional plexiglass facility, and has to undergo rigorous prototyping to ensure all structural issues are addressed.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
