Project Phoenix is a JRPG with a squad based RTS game design, brought to you by veteran developers and creators from the East and West.
15,802 backers pledged $1,014,600 to help bring this project to life.

Scales and Goals

Hey Everyone!

We’re only $100,000 away from our next stretch goal. As a thank you to all of you who have pledged your support, we've come up with a small way to give back. Also, we will begin posting smaller updates to keep you interested, though we've still got some big ones planned as well ;)

New Stretch Goal

We’re announcing our new stretch goal for $800k! Backers that pledge $50 or more will receive a digital copy of a poster, and those who pledge $120 or more will receive the physical copy as well. The artwork that you receive will be a Kickstarter exclusive, and will not be included in the limited edition art book or be released ever again.

New Character Scale

Some of you may have already seen the rough concept art we released for Marcus. If not, here is the image that we will be using to create a model of Marcus:

Once we hit our $1.025M stretch goal, we will be able create a massive overworld. We’ll be using two of the scaled figures from the rough sketch below to populate this world. Sketches ( 1 ) & ( 3 ) will not be used, and have only been included to show head to body ratio.

Example: In the sketch ( 1 ) Ruffles body is three time larger than her head.

( 2 ) The majority of the time, your characters will be in this scale; whether you are in battle, a city, or just exploring the world.

( 4 ) This scale will be utilized for all the cinematic scenes in the game.

      +1 Strayth, or even without stretch goal !

    2. Creator Eifeuen on August 25, 2013

      3rd scale FTW !

    3. Creator Strayth on August 24, 2013

      Can't you make a stretch goal about having number 3 as character art during gameplay ?

    4. Creator Zerotown on August 21, 2013

      I am sorry if this may come across as rude, for that is not my intention. However: a strech-goal that doesn't add anything meaningful to the game but instead offers you a digital(!) picture at the $50(!) entry level and a normal one at $120?. That - to me - is one of the least impressive strech-goals I've encoutered so far. :(

    5. Creator Ruben on August 21, 2013

      Question: Will the poster be "Project Phoenix key visual featuring Marcus Stern by GONTARO"?

    6. Creator Coudert Charly on August 20, 2013

      The character design is really nice ! Can't wait to see the final result.

    7. Creator Kevin Tom on August 20, 2013

      Definitely digging the character designs, looking at them brings back a great feeling of nostalgia. Can't wait to see a couple of 3D models.

      Just out of curiosity, what type of material do you plan to print the poster on, will it be cloth or just regular glossy paper? I'm assuming its the latter.

      I think that the standard A4 size was a fantastic choice as it accommodates a standard frame size. Since it's an original and rare piece of art, I'm sure many others like me would love to put it in a nice case and display it somewhere in their homes.

      @TheChosenOne - I understand that many hi-res images will be posted on CIA's social media sites, have you considered downloading the image and blowing it up at a print shop? I've done something similar to that before, and the cost would probably run you about the same price as an additional reward on the Kickstarter campaign.

    8. Creator St. McDuck on August 20, 2013

      Love the character designs! Reminds me of a more detailed Final Fantasy 7 (which I still love to this day, blocky characters and all).

    9. Creator Trypetide on August 20, 2013

      @Cronus, yeah I guess so, if the package is ultra flat, it's understandable. Well so be it, a store then =3 ! Keep the good work~

      @Michele
      Yes, it's reasonable.
      And I understand @TheChosenOne statement too: if you're willing to pay more, you can have more goodies sent to you, but in another box (so with shipping cost obviously, like in the future store).
      For now they don't really have ideas to when/how/how much they can do in addition of what they've already projected. There is enough time to consider these options, so we'll have to wait & see.

    10. Creator Michele "Wise Monkey" on August 20, 2013

      @Jordi Escobar If you consider the differece between the previous strech goal and this one is 150K and since it was added in the course of the campaign between two largest strech goals which were calculated based on the amount of money necessary for their development I think that's a reasonable reward.

    11. Creator Sir Jordi on August 20, 2013

      a (huge) 800K strech goal for having.. a poster? o_O'
      come on..

    12. Creator TheChosenOne on August 20, 2013

      Adding a poster to all tiers as a stretchgoal is not really a good idea. Not everyone wants one thus raising the costs unneededly and I want mine much bigger (pref a 22" X 36" format) and rolled in a tube anyway.
      -
      Why not just add it as an addon? I don't mind paying more for shipping.
      Ask us first, communicate, do a poll/survey. See what we really want first before adding such things. Give us the choice. I pledged another $35-50 or so for a poster on another project.

      I see I'm not the only one that prefers sketch 3 over sketch 2.

    14. Creator Creative Intelligence Arts, LLC on August 20, 2013

      @Trypetide
      We don't have enough room to include a tube. The poster will be laid flat, and well protected inside the Collector's Edition box. I can look into creating a store on the website for individual peices of art, and figurines, but a store will not be ready before the Kickstarter ends.

      @Cronus
      If possible in the future, It would be glorious to have the possibility to purchase the Marcus illustration from the front page (the blue one), also in A4.
      It would be A4 large, but much bigger in height, rolled up in a tube or whatever works.
      Included in the kickstarter's package would not cost much more than before too.
      Please consider this option !!

    16. Creator DH531 on August 20, 2013

      I like having 2 for gameplay and 4 for cinematics!! Don't change it!! (≧∇≦)/

    17. Creator Creative Intelligence Arts, LLC on August 20, 2013

      I'll have higher resolution images posted on our Facebook, website, etc.

    18. Creator Creative Intelligence Arts, LLC on August 20, 2013

      @Trypetide
      We will not fold the posters. It's the reason that we're rewarding A4 sized posters, because any larger and we would need to ship them seperately.

      Yes, as a Developer, you will receive all the rewards from lower tiers.

      Agreed, I too think the 3rd sketch would be a better choice for battle, city n world exploration. Also, stretch goals should indicate in-game additions and content. You can provide for posters and other such things as Optional Add-Ons.

    22. Creator Strayth on August 20, 2013

      3rd scale all the way >_>

    23. Creator madGamer on August 20, 2013

      Great update! I like the characters concept but i wold like to see 3rd sketch for battle, city and exploring the world. anyway good work!

    24. Creator TanC on August 20, 2013

      I second @Maxime's ideas on giving incentive for every 1000s increase in backers. So, let's say you take the base game price at $20 and for every 2000 new backer that pledges, you'll put in something that could be done with $40,000 ($20 x 2000). May just be a dungeon level, more rooms, or something that could be done simply and cheaply.

    25. Creator Yuchen Y. on August 20, 2013

      800k for a poster? I want to see real goals for the game. Not rewards for backers. =(

    26. Creator Inquisitioner on August 20, 2013

      The fourth scale is perfect for cinematic. However, the third scale would be far better for the majority of the time.

    27. Creator Maxime on August 20, 2013

      Guys... you don't need an edit button! Just reread your post >>before<< posting it, not after :P
      I'm quite happy with this update too, be it just for the pretty pictures ^^
      The poster will be a cool little thing to have, so I don't mind either way.
      What could be interesting (not sure if it's kickstarter-ethical, though but I've seen it before :P) to generate more interest would be to set either a backer gauge or a facebook likes gauge with goals that do something. Doesn't need to be anything huge, but it gives something cool inbetween the stretch goals. For example, the project I'm thinking about had a secret dungeon and each 5000 backers or something like that would add a floor to that dungeon.

    28. Creator Vince Vazquez on August 20, 2013

      Ugh... "I'm a little disappointed we >>>CAN'T<<< click for higher res versions..."

      Why doesn't Kickstarter let you Edit, or Delete & Redo, comments? :(

    29. Creator Vince Vazquez on August 20, 2013

      I'm a little disappointed we can click for higher res versions of this art. I'd personally love to take a look at higher res model sheets like this for personal reference (I do 3D character modeling too), but still, it all looks lovely. Really evokes the classics. The Chibi style avatars for the main game is exactly what those classic sprites should look like translated to 3D, like in Final Fantasy: 4 Heroes of Light or Bravely Default -- LOVE IT! And the more detailed avatars should look aces in cutscenes. Can't wait for more meaty updates :)

      * Seriously though, crossing my fingers for higher res stuff in the future :P *

    30. Creator Trypetide on August 19, 2013

      @Marcos
      Yeah, isometric would be good, but not fixed, like in Grandia II. Something just a little on the top but not too far, that you can turn 360°.
      (and in city, why not included an FPS static view, I missed this in so many games with great aesthetics)

    31. Creator Trypetide on August 19, 2013

      其れ共... なにか?

    32. Creator Marcos Nijborg on August 19, 2013

      I like sketch 2 a lot, it got a nice mix between SD and more realistic (but still 'cartoony') like 3. The sketch 4 is perfect for cinematics. Somehow it remember me RO (good old days). Something I don't remember reading (but maybe just overlooked), the perspective of the game (not in battle) will be isometric? or other?
      Great update, keep it going to maintain the interest, maybe next time you can focus more in future game-mechanics, I think a lot of people would be willing to back the project with a little more info in certain topics of the game per se.

      (would love to have it with the same material as the cloth-map but I'm just dreaming)

    35. Creator Trypetide on August 19, 2013

      @Cronus
      For the shipping of the posters, pretty please, consider not folding them, but rolling them in a little tube.
      (Maybe something like a parchment, with a fake seal on it... like a in-game item, that would be neat =3 !!!)

    36. Creator Tzolak-Rescue of Amberlina/Spark Rising (deleted) on August 19, 2013

      This is really epic. I'm assuming that, I, as a developer rank tier, will receive these posters (or poster if it's really only 1)?

      This is getting super cool to me! :)

      Personally, I really like the 3rd sketch best...perfect size IMHO.

    37. Creator Mark LeMire on August 19, 2013

      I'm guessing that 2 is for simplicity in running the game as well as art style. This should certainly be interesting since 4 is a more grim and realistic style. Make sure you can keep the styles somewhat similar so that the cinematic scenes won't take us away from appreciating the general art. If they are too different, then you might have a problem.

    38. Creator Ale on August 19, 2013

      this is awesome! can't wait to see some ingame stuff, and maybe some of these days a rough example of the cinematic style : p

    39. Creator Jalister - OOoE / WoOS / SoSR on August 19, 2013

      I like that sketch 4 will be used for cinematic scenes. Sketch 1 is exactly what I don't like about most J type games. Sketch 2 is definitely better, but personally I would prefer sketch 3 for normal game play. Most backers that are here for the J in JRPG probably wouldn't agree with me though. That's OK though. I wasn't going to be surprised if a JRPG didn't have the exact type of art style that I prefer. I'll stick around to see what else develops.

    40. Creator Keith McCoy on August 19, 2013

      Thanks for the update. This is good info. If we could get an update like this every day or 2, it would feel "right", and keep people excited about the Kickstarter. I like the scale chart above. Size 2 is my preferred for gaming in a jrpg (and I think the Marcus image looks good at this scale)....but 4 will be appropriate for cutscenes, I'm sure.

    41. Creator Dieithrio on August 19, 2013

      In-game content would be better!
