The NFL owners are threatening to lock us players out if we don't give into their demands. Locked Out will go where the media can't.
Hey Kickstarter, my name is Evan Mathis and I’m an aspiring filmmaker. I grew up watching football and spent countless hours as a kid in the backyard trying to do what I had just seen on TV. As a 6 year old, I thought those guys were just out there playing for fun. Through each level I played in, I gradually started to notice just how business oriented my passion was. It was subtler in the high school years but when I played for the University of Alabama, I noticed the amount of money that the game generated.
The NFL is a nine billion dollar a year business, and that only counts the direct revenue generated by the games themselves. When you consider all of the other money involved—from merchandise and advertising down to food, travel and hotel revenues--the total financial impact of professional football is staggering. Now, the team owners are threatening to do their own version of a strike, which would be called a lockout. They claim they can’t make enough money under the current agreement, and want the players to play two more regular season games, and take a one billion dollar a year pay cut.
This film will give a behind the scenes look at what the lockout is and what it could do to professional football. I will get interviews with those closest to the situation and reveal all there is to know about it. If an NFL owner can help me see it from his point of view, maybe I’ll better understand why they would be willing to do something that would impact the millions of people that the game is so important to.
We are currently in production and will be using this money raised through Kickstarter to produce the best footage possible, as well as for post-production expenses. Even if the lockout can be averted this year, this production will continue on to completion. As we are already in production, the emphasis will shift (if needed) to the process that led to the agreement between the owners and players. Our current footage documents just how we’ve arrived at this historic moment in time; we would be more than happy to talk about how a lockout crisis was avoided. If you want to be part of something historic and unique, jump on board and you’ll be glad you did.
***UPDATE*** I've been doing numerous interviews where I'm asked if this will be a one sided film. On the surface it would easily appear that this is just a player complaining about what the Lockout could do to the players. That's not what this film is. It's no type of propaganda one way or the other. Everybody is going to be able to tell their side of the story. The owners have a reason they want more money, the players have a reason they don't want to play 18 games, the cities that benefit from the league economically have something to say, and so on. This will be a fair film and this historic moment in sports needs to be documented.
