Daily Update -- 3/17

Posted by Michael Juliano / DCI (Creator)

Hi everyone,

First, a big thank you to the latest Backers for their support. I really appreciate it!

So, as I type this the landing video is being uploaded. I'll post the link at the bottom of the update and embed it in the KS page as usual. While I'm waiting though, I thought I'd take a couple moments to talk about a few different things. I've mentioned these before, but as similar questions have come up it never hurts to reiterate...

One, after the KS is finished (successful or not) I do believe I'll be adding some sort of "store" to the RogSys website for direct contributions. I have a pretty good plan for this now, I think. I'll just need a few days to finalize things, revamp the webpage a bit, and add the store itself. Check back at the website (www.roguesystemsim.com) for more info when it's available.

Two, I have to say again that RogSys is still science-fiction, even with the Newtonian-based flight model, real-time updating galaxy, etc. The study-sim nature of it is in the modeling, dependency, control and damage of these fictional ship systems, as well as the structure of the missions themselves. I've read in a few forums where people wonder what's the point if I'm not being 100% realistic. The point is to offer a deeper experience than just aiming and pulling the trigger over and over--to feel like you're really in control of this ship you're piloting. The goal for Rogue System is that knowledge, training and experience are at least as important for making a "kill" as is aim, just as it is with any true combat flight-sim. For many of you I'm "preaching to the choir"; but if this helps one more person to grasp what I'm trying to accomplish then it was worth typing :)

Finally, RogSys will NOT "die" without Kickstarter funding. I have a full milestone's worth of tasks to begin as soon as the KS is complete. All a lack of KS funding means is that I can't go to full time production yet, nor properly hire individuals to help me. Does Rogue System deserve full-time attention? I believe it does, yes. Will it die without it? Not if I have anything to say about it (and I DO).

But, we still have a few days left here--let's see where they take us ;) As always, thanks to all of you!

Michael

@Astral: This effect their store had on their KS effort is the reason I haven't started one yet. Likewise, I have been thinking a lot about future funding efforts and how this might help/hinder those. I few things have to fall into place, but I think this will be a viable option...

Glad to see that this is not going to be the end of it. I really want to open my laptop one day and sit behind that cockpit.

Before doing this, consider whether or not you plan to run a future KS. Skyjacker tried KS twice (http://kck.st/JcvpW5 and http://kck.st/Lkp0vc) before setting up a store for direct donations, but that seemed to have a knock-on effect with their third project http://kck.st/UWxOw8 since their store had "cannibalised" their KS fanbase.
