At Sly Flourish, we're always looking for ways to make the lives of GMs easier. A year ago, with the help of nearly 800 people, we were able to put together Sly Flourish's Fantastic Locations, a book that let you drop rich, detailed fantasy locations into your existing fantasy roleplaying game. Today we're looking to expand that effort into a new stand-alone book of short adventures called Sly Flourish's Fantastic Adventures.
Sly Flourish's Fantastic Adventures will contain ten short adventures for the fifth edition of the world's most popular roleplaying game, designed for characters of 2nd to 5th level. We've designed each of these adventures so GMs can drop them into any fantasy campaign world. Whether you run a homebrew setting or a published game world, these adventures will fit in as either main adventure hooks or side quests to be undertaken by the characters in your game.
Each adventure includes a map of the adventure location and a special presentation format designed to make it as easy as possible for game masters to pick up this book, choose an adventure, and get started playing. Whether you're running a single-session adventure for a few friends or want to drop a short adventure into the middle of your longer campaign, Fantastic Adventures has you covered.
Though this book works completely on its own, each adventure also includes hooks to one of the locations from Sly Flourish's Fantastic Locations. As part of this Kickstarter, we're offering discounted reward tiers that include both Fantastic Adventures and Fantastic Locations, letting fill your GM toolbox with a plethora of stories to share and places to set them.
The money for this Kickstarter will help fund the design, editing, cartography, and artwork for the book. The more money we receive, the better the book will be.
You can check out a PDF sample of Sly Flourish's Fantastic Adventures right now to get a feel for the philosophy behind the book, a summary of the book's adventures, and a sample adventure—"The Night Blades", ready to run tonight!
Below is the cover of the book, with artwork by Jack Kaiser.
If we meet our funding requirement, we'll develop the book of ten adventures with black-and-white maps for each adventure. If the following stretch goals are met, we'll add new artwork to the adventures, upgrade many of the black-and-white maps to full-color maps, and produce a separate book containing all the art and maps as handouts, as we did for Sly Flourish's Fantastic Locations.
Here's a current list of stretch goals for Sly Flourish's Fantastic Adventures!
$5,500: Five pieces of internal artwork for five adventures.
$7,500: Five additional pieces of internal artwork for the remaining five adventures.
$8,500: We'll put together an art book of all the art and maps for the adventures in PDF for all reward tiers. This will be available for print-on-demand for the print tier and above.
$10,000: Full color maps for at least half the maps in the book.
$11,000: The artist, Cecil Howe, will develop two maps for the book including a village map of Whitesparrow and an overland map that connects all of the locations together.
$12,000: A set of pregenerated characters designed to play from 1st to 5th level. Perfect for using Fantastic Adventures for single-session or convention-play games.
A Note about Print Copies
In order to give you the best price for print versions of the book, we will fulfill print orders through RPGNow. We used this for Fantastic Locations, and the results were spectacular. In order to receive print copies of the book, you will be responsible for paying the cost of printing, shipping, and handling. Usually this is about $13 for each color print copy of the main books, $7 for the printing of the art books, and $6 for shipping in the continental US. We have priced our reward tiers low to account for this additional cost. When the books are ready, you will receive a link to buy these books at cost from RPGNow.
Risks and challenges
This is my third Kickstarter. Both of my previous Kickstarters were delivered on time and with no problems. Each member of the team we've put together for "Fantastic Adventures" has done this sort of work before, and the project includes contingencies should any phase become delayed. Because we fulfill our physical books through print-on-demand, you don't need to worry about issues with printing and delivery.
Because this book is being produced by a small but dedicated creative team, real-life issues could result in delays to the schedule. Nonetheless, we fully expect to deliver the book on time.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
