Thank you in advance for helping me realize my dream and follow my passion as I'm looking to launch my first album called My American Songbook: Patsy Cline. As the title implies, the inspiration for this project is the one and only Patsy Cline, her voice, her songs and her incredible spirit. Let me tell you a little bit more about what I'm looking to do and how the idea came about...
When I was trying to determine the focus for my very first (eek!) album, I noticed that most jazz singers interpret songs from the Great American Songbook. It's a treasure trove for an artist in terms of lyrics and melodies and offers a solid ground for someone to put their own individual "stamp" on a familiar song. While I did have exposure to these incredible musical jewels growing up, my everyday playlist involved a different "American" songbook, one that consisted heavily of traditional country artists including Ernest Tubb, Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, Tammy Wynette, Conway Twitty and, of course, Patsy Cline. So, I decided to go back to my childhood and find a more authentic connection -- mining the depths of MY American Songbook.
It was natural for me to choose Patsy Cline. I know the songs backward and forward, the emotion, the connection to the lyrics. Ironically, as I'm working on this project, Patsy is showing me even more as an adult as I reflect on my childhood and life up until this point. Perhaps other jazz singers find the same thing through reimagining classics from Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday or Nancy Wilson: Patsy is teaching me about myself, my creative process and following my passion with every bone in my body.
I've been working a while on this concept...determining which of Patsy's classic hits will be included, how to interpret them, rehearsing with musicians and spending time in the studio. The next phase will be more of the same in hopes to finish a full-length album over the course of the next six months to year! (I'm listing the delivery date as December '19, however the creative process will inform me....and perhaps it will be done even sooner.)
I'm more than inspired than ever (!) as I recently had the unbelievable opportunity of visiting the Patsy Cline Museum in Nashville, TN, and actually meeting Patsy Cline's daughter, Julie Fudge. What a moment! (Check out the photo below.)
One important consideration I'd like to make clear: My intention behind creating this album is not to sound like Patsy Cline. No one can! Instead, Patsy is helping me find my unique voice, my own creative approach, and I can't wait to share it with all of you. I believe all music, in all genres, continues to inform one another....and to that end, I hope you'll explore with me this intersection of country melody and lyric with jazz interpretation.
Thank you in advance for your support! It means the world to me!
PS - I hope you enjoy the video I created for this kickstarter campaign and hope it shows you a bit more about who I am, where I come from, and what my hope is in terms of creating something authentic and beautiful to share. Please note that the audio quality was affected by a missing lavalier mic on the day of the recording -- nothing is perfect, after all! Thanks for enjoying and supporting, friends. Look forward to connecting.
Risks and challenges
While many people have covered Patsy Cline songs, especially "Crazy," to the best of my knowledge, no one has done a complete project taking songs she made famous and reimagining them into jazz. I'm hoping that the cross-breeding of the two genres can introduce fans to a new way of interpreting each of these classic styles of music: jazz and country.
As this is my first project, I will need more support in terms of marketing to reach my potential audience. That said, these funds will not only go toward finishing the songs for the album, recording, and production, but also promoting the release and making sure that fans who may be interested can give it a listen!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
