Hi everyone! This summer I am feverishly working to put together an art show in my hometown before I move away to pursue my art school dreams in the big city! This project bears the title "Local Tourist" because I am using photographic, painted and printed imagery to explore the intersection of tourist art and the local self-image of the place that I call home: Oxford, Mississippi.
I have been living in this historic college town in the Deep South off and on for twenty years. As a local, I am proud of the ease and charm of the place, but as an artist I am concerned with how images of Oxford circulate as art in our homes and businesses in a redundant way. I have decided to work within the specific genres already popular (the nostalgic watercolor, the sunset photograph, the bright painting of the courthouse square, etc.) but I am re-mixing images and techniques. In order to make the connection between tourist art and local nostalgia more obvious, I have been incorporating images from my personal photographs of other "tourist" sites/ sights around the world.
This project has been underway for a couple of months now, but looking ahead to the opening in mid-August I see that I am going to need some additional funds in order to produce the exhibition. I am working alone as the artist, curator and producer of this show, and I could really use some backers to help my project come to life. Your pledge will be used for framing, publicity and the reception. I already have a venue and tentative opening confirmed, but I need your support in order to launch my project! Please consider helping me raise funds to meet my goal. I need to meet at least 100% of my goal in order to receive any funds at all, so please don't delay your pledge. I have estimated $1350 as the minimum amount needed to get my work ready for presentation, create labels, send out postcards and purchase food.
All backers receive signed original artwork. Any funding above the minimum will allow me to do a bang-up job at both the presentation and the party. And you're invited!
