Summer School/Festival devoted to keeping traditional Irish music, song and dance alive in the historic Catskill Mountains and beyond.

“For many folks, CIAW provides them with more Irish traditional music, dance, songs and crafts in one concentrated week than they’re likely to hear and see the other 51 weeks of the year.’’ Myron Bretholz, Irish Bodhran Musician and Teacher-- Baltimore.  Quoted in the Wall Street Journal article “The Green Hills of the Catskills” by Earle Hitchner

The Catskills Irish Arts Week is in its 18th Year in the Northern Catskills region in Greene County and will take place July 15-21, 2012.  Based around East Durham where our host organization, the M. J. Quill Irish Cultural and Sports Centre maintains its office, the CIAW fulfills Quill Centre’s mission statement of keeping the Irish musical heritage alive in the historic Irish Catskills region through its a highly successful and organized summer school taking place there every July since 1995.  Thousands of students from all across the U.S.A. and Canada and hundreds of artists have benefited from the CIAW over the past 17 years as we built a real Irish Village Community every year.  Each summer over 100 classes in traditional Irish instruments, songs, dance instruction and Celtic crafts have been offered by some of the finest exponents teaching and performing both in Ireland and North America garnering a world-wide reputation in the process.

The Monday to Friday classes are bolstered by late afternoon lectures on topics chosen by experts among the staff artists, nightly concerts on the Quill Festival Grounds

and dances (ceilithe) in Resort Halls (Shamrock and Weldon Houses and the Inn At Leeds) featuring all the CIAW recruited teaching and performing staff. The teachers and students then all fan out to a series of music jam sessions

playing and socializing alongside one another in the area's resorts and roadhouses that evoke an era when traditional music and dance was shared in informal settings in the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York.  And it is very expensive to accomplish all that and while we more than punched above our weight in years prior to this, the economy has hit us hard this year along with many of you.

Funding from public and private sources is down in the past few years and if we are to continue to reach our students with a high caliber program we need to reach out to a wider group of supporters this year.  It is important to keep on a track that also serves younger students with music and dance lessons through our classes and keep the week affordable for families and others who also have to incur travel expenses for a week in upstate New York. The CIAW also is a very important economic engine for the Greene County area around East Durham so it is vital that we keep the week going at a level that makes a difference for the Catskills region  and for our attendees.
We hope that potential donors appreciate the level of attention the CIAW has given to the preservation and fostering of Irish music in America and recognize that we could use assistance this year from the wider community NOW.
The need is extremely critical and urgent at present if the Catskills Irish Arts Week is to survive a very steep challenge this year...and its future existence.
