Trellie is based on a simple consumer insight – 80% of all women carry their phone in their purse and consequently miss over half of their incoming calls. This is unlike men who tend to carry their phone in a pants pocket.
The problem impacts everyone in the family:
Sometimes missing a call is okay. But there are some urgent, time sensitive calls that are just too important to miss. Missing a call from a doctor, school or caregiver can wreak havoc on a family. We at Trellie experienced this with our own families and quickly realized we were not the only ones. We talked to hundreds of men and women who had similar reactions:
- Moms who feel guilty when they miss important calls from the people they love.
- Men who are frustrated because they can't reach their spouse, girlfriend, mom, etc. because their phones are…you guessed it….buried in their handbags.
- Adults who are worried about the ability to reach aging parents.
We thought there had to be a better way. So we quit our jobs and have spent the past year working to solve this problem and help families stay connected!

Fashion Forward: Trellie fielded consumer research and worked with top designers to ensure we created a product that was both beautiful and functional. Our goal was to create a product that fits into a woman’s active lifestyle and looks good doing it.
Trellie’s mission is to ensure you are better connected to those who depend on you. Our market research indicates that 80% of people would always take a call from a spouse and 60% would always take a call from their own mothers—that is, if they heard the phone ring. Furthermore 60% of spouses believe they would NOT be able to reach each other in an emergency. We are here to change that!
At Trellie, we are focused on creating simple, beautifully-designed solutions to everyday problems. Trellie solves a functional need to receive important calls, but it really goes beyond that. It’s improving communication among loved ones. It saves time and worry. It provides added insurance for moms that they will not miss important calls from all the people who count on them including spouses, children, daycare, school, parents, close friends and colleagues.
We’re a small (yet MIGHTY!) Kansas City company with big plans to go along with our big ideas. Risks and challenges
Like any innovative new hardware product, Trellie enters a marketplace crowded with devices. The opportunity is to create a simple and functional product that appeals to busy parents; the challenge is to get noticed. There is little technology available today that is targeted towards women. We are challenged with creating a simple, functional device that also bridges into fashion/accessories.
Unlike some start-ups, we’ve met a lot of our manufacturing and marketing challenges already. To reduce risk, we sought (and got) advice from experts who helped us validate the need and vet both functionality and design of the product.
Our team has worked hard to address manufacturing, logistical and fulfillment challenges in advance. Our engineering team has a combined 50 years of experience in building, tooling, designing, and manufacturing Bluetooth enabled products. We’ve toured the manufacturing facilities, secured an independent testing facility, and ensured everything is ready once we say “go." So although there’s always risk in innovation, we’ve done everything within our means to minimize it.
The steps from prototype to fully-tested, manufactured product can be long and complicated; prototypes aren't always a reliable indicator of how the final product will perform. To address this, we have:
- built 10 working prototypes, not just one or two (plus countless printed circuit boards);
- contracted to have testing performed by an outside vendor to ensure accuracy;
- ordered a pre-production batch to further test the internal software, Bluetooth functionality, and product quality while we begin manufacturing
Delivering a consumer-ready product from working prototypes is another major step. Our team has experience in this area and has tested Bluetooth enabled solutions many times, with popular brands you probably use in your daily life. Our team has visited the manufacturing facility and secured all necessary parts vendors to procure and fulfill the needed components. We have designed this product from the beginning with manufacturability in mind. We will streamline the process by:
- working directly with manufacturers to set up and secure lead times for components;
- working with a US-based liaison to help vet the process, ensuring no language barrier, miscommunication, or misinterpretation;
- utilizing existing relationships with manufacturing facilities to reduce lag time. We have firm quotes for all of the components, including tooling. Our manufacturing partners have fully vetted and approved our production plans, anticipated quantities, and schedule.

Right now, between calculations and our tests we are looking at approximately 1-2 months with the device always on.
Trellie's range is 10-15ft from the phone.
In order to meet the broadest range of phones in the marketplace today we choose to go with standard Bluetooth (using Bluetooth v2.1+EDR). The vast majority of the phones made within the last 5yrs support Bluetooth. v2.1 is far and away the most utilized form of Bluetooth on the market today.
