About

The Jasper is a board gaming table with a 3' x 5' playing area that seats six people. Made in the USA by BoardGameTables.com.

You could write the next great novel on your phone, but you'll type faster on a laptop. Things go smoother when you have the right tool for the job.

A board game table is the perfect tool for playing board games.

The biggest difference between a "normal" table and a board game table is the recessed playing area. There are 3" wide armrests around the perimeter of the table, and you play games in an arena.

The Jasper has a one-piece padded, polyester felt surface in the play area. It is about 6mm thick with a rigid back so that it lays flat without bunching. Soft and smooth so cards slide across it, the play surface is heavy enough that it won't slide around.

Every table comes with a gray play surface. You will also have the option to buy additional felt playing surfaces in different colors if we hit some stretch goals (more info later).

Drinks and board games are the ultimate frenemies. They go so well together. A long gaming session needs some refreshment. But they cause so much drama. Even if you don't spill your drink, it can be a constant source of worry, threatening to damage your game, or mess up your game state.

Cup holders bring harmony.

Most of us aren't lucky enough to have a room dedicated to gaming. If you are, that's awesome. But The Jasper is also designed to work as your everyday table in your kitchen or dining room.

Complete list of all dimensions at the bottom of the page.

A sleek timeless design that doesn't scream "look at me!", but patiently waits for you to discover its beauty, in your time, while eating dinner or playing a game.

Its 3' x 5' playing area hits the sweet spot for board games. Six people fit very comfortably. Any game except the biggest monsters fit. But you don't have to strain to reach across it.

The Jasper is a budget conscious table, but that doesn't mean cheaply built. You won't find any particle board or MDF in your Jasper. It's made from solid wood. Malaysian Oak (also known as Rubberwood or Hevea brasiliensis). It is a wood that has similar hardness characteristics as North American hardwoods, but is less expensive.

But using solid materials doesn't automatically mean a solid table. That's why we are making The Jasper in the USA (in Jasper, MO). This gives us the tightest possible quality assurance process, and a quick turn around time if problems need to be fixed. Production will be overseen by the same woodworkers who make our high end custom tables.

Tables will be shipped in backer order. The earlier you back, the sooner you get your table.

The price will be higher after the campaign ends.

Built on Experience. We've been building custom game tables for 4 years, and sold over 3,500 Duchess gaming tables in our previous Kickstarter. We are avid gamers. We know what gamers need. Benefit from everything we've learned.

Chad founded BoardGameTables.com four years ago. He (I?) plays games every Thursday on the very first prototype we (Kyle) built. I love Age of Steam, Haggis, Napoleon's Triumph, and Indonesia.

Katy is our customer support champion and logistics maestro. If you email us (jasper@boardgametables.com), you will be hearing from Katy. Her favorite game is Castles of Mad King Ludwig. She was super happy about the table's name selection, as it's also the name of her pup (complete coincidence since the table is named after Jasper, MO).

Russ has a degree in Wood Technology. He can look down the edge of a board and tell you if it is straight, even while wearing a blindfold.

Kyle has built enough custom home poker, craps, and blackjack tables to open a casino. Now he's (mostly) converted to games that rely on victory points instead of money. Most woodworkers use glue, but Kyle just squeezes the boards together, commands them to stick, and they obey him.

Russ and Kyle will oversee the production of The Jasper, but it will take a whole team of workers to cut, drill, sand, stain, sand, finish, sand, and pack your Jasper.

Additionally, this would not be possible without our talented freelancers. Anca Gavril who made all the graphics and drawing on this page. Digital Lunchbox who shot and produced the main video. Max Kreutzer who made the behind the scenes video. And my many friends who help me test prototype tables and volunteered to be in videos and photoshoots.

No matter how many pictures or videos I show you of The Jasper, it is never the same as touching it. Feeling it. Crawling under it. Shaking it.

So we did the next best thing. We took it to Gen Con for 65,000 of your fellow geeks to inspect it for you. Hopefully some of them will speak up in the comments section. Here's what some of them had to say:

The Jasper table costs $599 and has the following optional add-ons:

We don't have shipping prices for the stretch goal items yet.

A chief goal of The Jasper is that it would be both easy to assemble and foolproof to assemble.

Easy to assemble means that you don't have to push, beat on things, or stretch too far. It means that the table holds itself together for you as you go. We added extra screws that aren't really needed structurally, but they help you hold things in place during assembly.

Foolproof assembly means that it is almost impossible to assemble it wrong. Similarly sized screws are color coded. Boards naturally fit in obvious places. Things that need to be tight are naturally tightened correctly.

The only tools you will need are your own Phillips head screwdriver and an Allen wrench we provide.

Check out the assembly instruction pdf.

*Extra charges for shipping to non-contiguous US states and territories (Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico, etc).

Tables are big and heavy to ship. We've worked hard to keep the price down while still protecting the table.

In order to keep things streamlined and make sure we stay on schedule, we are only able to offer shipping to the US and Canada right now. It is our hope and plan to run another Kickstarter campaign with shipping to many more countries after we deliver on this campaign. Right now we think adding overseas shipping might cause unforeseen complications.

The Jasper has Canadian friendly shipping. It will ship to you from inside Canada. You will owe no duty.

We are already pretty far along in the development lifecycle of The Jasper. The prototyping and much of the prep work has already been done. We are ready to start building your table.

Prototypes

  • First prototype: Assembly was too hard. Felt was ok, but not great. Play area corner issues. Not happy with stain color.
  • Second prototype: Much easier to assemble. Corners fixed. Felt was better, but color wasn't good. Not happy with stain color.
  • Third prototype: Testing wood from the final source. One more tweak needed to ease assembly. Felt great. Not happy with stain color.
  • Fourth prototype: Testing wood from a cheaper source. It isn't as good. Final table will use wood from same source as prototype three. Assembly is amazing. Happy with stain color.

Pilot Production Runs

  • First batch: Building 20 tables. Creating all the jigs that will be used during mass production. Setting up the physical assembly line and defining the processes. We are almost finished with this step. We will be shipping these tables to test the packaging.
  • Pilot production run: Building 200 tables. Testing the process. Fine tuning it to make sure we are ready for mass production. We have the wood for this step and will begin soon.

We are not counting on any timeline with these pilot run tables. They are part of the learning and setup process. However, if some of them are ready before the main production tables, then we will create a higher priced "deliver immediately pledge level" after the campaign and give you the option to upgrade to that new pledge level in the pledge manager.

Shipment Schedule

All that prep work should really help make our estimates more accurate, but there are a lot of variables. These are our best realistic estimated dates. Tables will ship strictly based on the order you back the campaign (so don't delay!).

The "Backer Number" that Kickstarter assigns to you is a good estimate of where you will be on this list, but you will be higher on the list than your backer number would have you believe, because people with $1 pledges or canceled pledges also get backer numbers.

We have some backup plans in place to increase capacity if this Kickstarter really takes off. Namely building or renting more space, hiring more employees, etc. If it looks like we aren't going to get everyone their table by November 2019 (either because we aren't meeting our predicted pace or because we sell so many tables), then we will start putting those plans into place.

This is Kickstarter. There are many unforeseen things that could happen. However, we are much further along in the process with The Jasper than we were with The Duchess at this point. Detailed plans are in place, suppliers are lined up, molds have been made, test orders have been placed, machinery has been purchased, and we are refining the production process right now. We will have challenges. Nothing comes easy. But we will communicate with you frequently and honestly through the whole process.

BoardGameTables.com's flagship product is Custom Board Game Tables.

With custom tables, we don't start building anything until you order. And then your table goes through a one-off build process. Over 60 different sizes are available. Over 30 different wood and stain combinations. Two dozen fabric colors. And more options and accessories than you can shake a stick at (what does that expression even mean?!).

This means you get the perfect table for your situation. In fact, I don't think we have ever built two identical tables. It means that each table is essentially a custom woodworking project. So, the typical custom table costs between $2,500 and $5,500.

You can build your dream table at https://www.boardgametables.com/builder/size.

The Jasper greatly reduces costs by:

  • Reducing the options and standardizing the build process. We took the most popular/versatile size/features from the custom tables and designed the one table that will work for the most gamers.
  • Requiring some assembly at home. Will assembly at home ever be as good as professionally screwed-and-glued joints done by wood workers? No. But we can get pretty close and it provides excellent cost savings.
  • Reducing shipping costs. Custom tables have to be shipped on a pallet by a semi-truck. It costs about $300 for shipping. Home assembly means we can fit the table in a smaller box that can be shipped by UPS. It allows shipping costs to start at $69.

About 2 years ago, we ran a Kickstarter campaign for a game table called The Duchess. That campaign raised over $2.5 million. We sold over 3,500 Duchess tables.

The Duchess was the first mass produced board gaming table ever. It was about 1/3 the price of anything else on the market. It made gaming tables accessible to people who never thought they'd be able to get one. I am very proud of The Duchess.

However, we had some challenges along the way. We were not able to produce the tables as quickly as we had planned and the percentages of tables damaged in shipment was higher than it should have been. We replaced everyone's damaged pieces, and have made changes to The Jasper to directly address these issues.

Read the campaign FAQ for more details about the difference between The Duchess and The Jasper.

Questions about how the cup holders slide on and off? Here's a cell phone video of me showing how it works and showing the weight they can bear.

Don't have a clear picture of exactly what this play surface material is? I made a cell phone video where I show you both sides of the play surface, how it lays, and how it tucks into the edge of the table.

Worried that you are going to spill something and it will leak through the topper? This video shows exactly how the rubber nubs hold the topper in place and how the tongue and groove and gasket all fit together.

Risks and challenges

I am confident we can produce a quality table. The two biggest risks are not being able to produce them at the rate we need to or having damage in shipping. We are putting the experience of our previous campaign to work and have done a ton of prep work to avoid these problems.
