"Without a doubt the best fantasy RPG ever written... one of those rare games that's practically impossible to not have fun while playing..." - Doodmons, Something Awful forum
Return to the Claw
Welcome! The goal of this Kickstarter is to raise money for Book Two of the Ennie-nominated Spellbound Kingdoms RPG. The book is titled Spellbound Kingdoms: Arcana, and it adds adventure and excitement to every aspect of the game.
Spellbound Kingdoms is a fantasy tabletop roleplaying game set in a dark Renaissance unlike any other. Zeppelins, slavering undead, colossi, feral children, alchemy and magic all combine in a world where love and fear are the most powerful forces in the world.
If you don't have the original core rule book, you can pick it up as part of this Kickstarter. You'll be glad you did!
If you already have it, sit back. You're in for a treat.
We have 12 new combat styles and 3 new magic styles. For example, an early version of Shield and Star:
10 new classes or sub-classes make their debut in the book. What could be more Spellbound Kingdoms than an adventuring poet?
That's not nearly all, of course. Every facet of the game is polished and sparkling anew. There is a new lifepath character generation system that is almost a game in itself - and it can generate a character of the book's new SK race, the Broken Ones.
There are 10 new subclasses, one for each core class. The Fixer gets the Angel subclass, the Warrior gets the Templar, and Wizards get the Twister subclass.
How about dozens and dozens of new talents? Close to a hundred new alchemical and engineering items? And many more new troops, spells, monsters, weapons, buildings, vehicles, chase courses, improv games for social combat, and environment tricks. There is an expanded GM's Toolbox section that makes your life as a Spellbound Kingdoms GM even easier.
New to the Kingdoms?
If you haven't played Spellbound Kingdoms before, now is the perfect time to start. The core rulebook is included in many backer levels, and you can even get copies for your entire group at the Trader level.
Why the Kingdoms? Because here, love and fear are the most powerful forces in the world. That's not just ad hype: to defeat someone in the Kingdoms, you have to attack what he loves: burn his fields, shame him at court, tear apart his family. Gameplay is driven toward court intrigue, duels, and military campaigns that defile shrines and lay waste to villages.
Spellbound Kingdoms also achieves what sometimes seems to be the RPG industry's holy grail: a fun and relevant social combat system. But if you haven't played SK before, the best thing you can do is check out reviews like this one. The time to start playing is now!
Follow That Zeppelin
SK Arcana has big, Ennie-nominated, best-selling shoes to fill. There are some grand expectations out there. It's my job to make sure this book exceeds those expectations.
One of the many ways it will do that is through the art. The more funds raised here, the better the art in the book will be. Portraits, maps, chapter headers, monsters, layout - every last piece can be improved. There is a tremendous amount of fantastic free-to-use artwork out there, like "The Murder of Andrei Bogolyubskiy" by Sergei Kirillov:
But as evocative as that is, it could be even more so - in the context of this work - if it were specific to the Claw. SK will never turn away from using appropriate public domain paintings by grand masters - they're grand masters, after all! And the new book is already benefitting from artwork by talented folks like Nika Wong (the wizard and the harbormaster in the video trailer) and Tadas Sidlauskas (the poet class above and the pieta in the video trailer). But every dollar raised brings us closer to the level of graphic art that a game like Spellbound Kingdoms deserves.
$4000 - Game aids. The new book already includes a Rules Summary reference sheet, but this goal unlocks a second reference sheet specifically for beginners. It also gives you a new character sheet, an organization sheet, a region sheet, two GM quick reference tables, and a new and extensive achievement list.
$5500 - The War in East Fire. As King Lucius I proclaims from his screened palanquin in Hessek, Akra has always been at war with Azenahal. East Fire is the eternal bauble that the two giants struggle over. At this stretch goal, you get the unique weapons, armor, and magic used in the War in East Fire, both in individual and mass combat.
$7000 - Rithaign Below. You get a gallery of NPCs with full statistics, personalities, and backgrounds, all featuring in and around the underworld of Rithaign. Their organizations will be statted and detailed as well. Some names you will recognize from the core rule book, other names will be new, but they're all ready to plug in and run.
$ 9000 - Nightmares of the Kingsmen. You get a bonus pdf that includes dozens of gadgets, poisons, weapons, techniques, and dream projector lenses used by the Kingsmen in Akra and Marnh. A short adventure is added on too!
$11000 - [LOCKED]
Goals added as the campaign warrants!
Risks and challenges
This is Book Two of the Spellbound Kingdoms game, and I have years of pre-SK experience with Paizo, WOTC and others, so this isn't my first tilt in the lists, so to speak. On the other hand, it is the first time I'm using Kickstarter, so there may be some unforeseen challenges.
I'm confident that we'll be able to meet those challenges. I'm using DriveThruRPG for fulfillment. I haven't opened the Kickstarter until now because I wanted to wait until we have a project ready to go. It is now ready to go. I can't wait for you to see it!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
