P’s & Q’s Market, a neighborhood grocery and deli, aims to become a cornerstone of the Woodlawn community by acting as both a bustling lunch & supper counter and purveyor of foods and daily staples. The goods on the shelves at the Market will be curated considering quality, craftsmanship, locality, flavor, demand from the neighborhood and accessibility. The goal is to raise the standard of the neighborhood corner grocery store in Portland, OR and to create good jobs, support local farmers, provide community space and contribute to the growth of the burgeoning Woodlawn neighborhood. P’s & Q’s will be a retail grocery and deli, offering fresh, varied, healthful, mainly locally sourced essential produce, pantry staples, and dry goods which are at once specialty and also accessible and in line with the needs and tastes of the neighborhood. The deli will offer dine in or take out family meals-simple seasonally inspired food done right.
P’s & Q’s Market will be located at 1301 NE Dekum in the Woodlawn neighborhood of Portland, OR.
This neighborhood is lacking a daily essentials grocery market and deli while continuing to grow and develop. The location of the Market in Woodlawn is ideal because the owners are neighborhood residents and because this area is blossoming and becoming a more densely populated and viable business district. The Market’s location in the city of Portland and the Willamette Valley also dictates it’s philosophy. This area is in one of the most fertile agricultural lands in the country, and in a city that embraces local food and supports small business.
P’s & Q’s will fulfill a real need in the Woodlawn neighborhood, an area lacking easy access to fresh, whole foods. P’s & Q’s will specifically market products to the 5,000+ people who live and work in the neighborhood. Woodlawn has been steadily changing and becoming an area known for great food, with new establishments readily supported by an involved community. P’s & Q’s will be catering to the local residents, local businesses (including employees of a nearby University and many offices, warehouses and factories just north on Lombard and Columbia Blvds.), visitors to neighboring Woodlawn Park, and the growing number of people making Woodlawn a destination.
Having worked in food service for years, Emily and Paul, owners of P’s & Q’s, dreamt up the Market out of a love for good food and community, varied experience in food service and retail environments and the opportunity presented by an established grocery space in their neighborhood becoming available for lease.
P's & Q's goal is to promote community through food. We believe change starts with supporting our local farmers and artisans; our local economy.
We've been working on this project for years, and are so close to opening our doors! We've been so lucky to have much support from friends and family and are just a little bit short on the funds we need to finish our build out and stock our shelves. You can help shape our community with your contribution and input!
Thank you so much for your support! Emily & Paul
Risks and challenges
As with any new business, there is the potential of not passing building permits in the expected time frame, dealing with small profit margins and a myriad of other unforeseeables. We also realize that Portland, OR has become very saturated with restaurants and small businesses. We have received tremendous support from our neighborhood and have been assured that our neighborhood needs a market like ours as there is no related competition within at least a mile. Our years of experience in food service have prepared us to prevent issues before they arise, and to roll with these punches when they do come up unexpectedly. We've learned to be adaptable and resourceful. We have also lived and worked in this area long enough to have a solid network of advisors, volunteers, and general supporters to help us through these unforeseeable rough patches.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
