Thanks for taking the time to check out my Kickstarter campaign for my debut album, “Padme.” In November 2014 I plan to record “Padme” at Peter Karl Studios in Brooklyn, NY with recording engineer Michael Perez-Cisneros. The album will consist of nine compositions of mine, plus two arrangements of lesser-known jazz works.
Here is a little about me…
My name is Caili O’Doherty and I am a pianist, composer, and educator originally from Portland, OR, now based in New York City. I graduated from Berklee College of Music in 2013 where I studied jazz piano performance and was a member of the Berklee Global Jazz Institute, an intensive honors performance program headed by highly acclaimed pianist, Danilo Perez. Through this program I had the opportunity to perform and conduct outreach clinics and workshops in the U.S. and abroad in West Africa, Europe, and Central and South America. I have experienced the power of music and seen how music can heal and inspire people from all different circumstances.
I am fortunate to collaborate with incredibly talented musicians on this album that happen to be great friends of mine. Cory Cox from Houston, TX will be on drums and Zach Brown from Columbia, Maryland will be on bass. Additional quartet and larger ensemble members will include Alex Hargreaves on violin, Caroline Davis on alto saxophone and voice, Ben Flocks on tenor saxophone, Eric Miller on Trombone and special guest Adam Cruz on drums.
I chose the title Padme for several reasons. First, because it represents the beginning of my journey as a composer. It is the title of the very first composition I wrote, a song included on this album. Padme means lotus flower and it symbolizes, in many cultures, the concept of growth and awakening. The lotus flower begins growing at the bottom of a muddy pool, emerges and blooms on the surface of the water during daylight, and then closes and sinks below the surface each night, to bloom clean the next day. To me, it embodies the idea that each person, despite the conditions they start from, can hope to realize their dreams. Finally, Padme signifies places and cultures that are foreign to me. Most of the songs on this album were written while I was away from home in different countries or cities. These songs are my attempts to capture the stories of these places and cultures.
Through my Kickstarter campaign my goal is to raise $8,000. Your contributions will help me to pay for two full days of studio time, engineers, musicians, album artwork, promotion, post-production costs (i.e. mixing and mastering), and printing and distributing the album.
In addition to being a part of this creative journey with me, there are so many great rewards for your generous donations. I am so excited to share this music with all of you! Please feel free to contact me through my website with any questions about the album or rewards. Thank you so much in advance for all of your support!
Risks and challenges
The risks and challenges that come with completing my album "Padme" are that if I don't reach my goal of $8,000 by the end of the 30-day Kickstarter campaign, I won't receive ANY of the funds and this project won't get off the ground.
As a Kickstarter backer, you will receive special updates from me throughout this entire process. Please feel free to contact me through my website with any questions about the album or rewards!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
