About

In March 2015 I self-published my first novel on Amazon Kindle and Smashwords.  Though, it quickly became apparent that there was more to publishing a novel than buying an off-the-shelf cover and submitting to the website.  Below is a pic of the current cover:

As you can see, it's nothing special, it doesn't really stand out, so I thought it could help to commission a better cover.  Unfortunately, they're not cheap, running $500-1500 market standard.  Hence this Kickstarter.

And I thought, while I'm at it I might as well look at some interior illustrations as well.  The more pledges, the better the art I can afford.

The Pride of Parahumans is a unique science-fiction story about human-animal hybrids created by corporations as slave labor.  While there have been many works of fiction written about humans oppressing anthropomorphic animals and the struggle for anthros to achieve independence, there have been comparatively few stories about the aftermath.

This story picks up roughly ten years after the Parahumans won their freedom and have begun to build societies of their own out in the Asteroid Belt.  Unfortunately, like their creators, they seem to be developing some differences of opinion about how to run a civilization.  And like their creators, they sometimes attempt to settle those differences violently.

From the back cover:

"Parahumans were created to exploit a star system humanity lacked the courage to venture out into themselves. Grown from a blend of human and animal genes and printed over an alloy skeleton in a vat rather than born they were designed from the cells up for life in space.

But now, after years of fighting, they are free of Earth's tyranny. The Asteroid Belt is now a constellation of Parahuman habitats just figuring out how to survive without their old masters. Experimenting with every form of government from democracy to feudalism.

Argentum, Aniya, Cole, and Denal were just freelance prospectors based out of the Ceres Directorate when they ran into a pirate. It was only after they splattered him across space that they realized he had powerful relatives. They thought they could escape retribution by migrating to the anarchic habitat of Vesta.

But it turns out that no government doesn't mean no rulers. When Argentum gets a job with the Society for the Preservation of Parahuman Species that produces clones for Vesta's elite ze finds zirself with the very future of zir clade in their paws."

The universe that hosts The Pride of Parahumans is also the setting for a number of other short stories that I am currently writing or have already posted to websites like LiveJournal, FurAffinity, and SoFurry.

Risks and challenges

A cover artist is already lined up and I have made a down payment. The only risk is the dip into my savings that paying for the commission would represent. The amount of interior art will depend on the final payment.
