Where the money is going

Posted by Joel Kreissman (Creator)

One week in and five backers.

I figure that since I'm asking for about a thousand dollars for this project, you deserve to know where the money is going once the campaign is finished.

As such, I've made this pie chart to reflect the intended budget for the project.

As you can see, art is rather expensive, the cover alone takes up half of the working budget at $500, and that's the low end of the going rate for cover art.  Printing the rewards necessary to fund that is going to be another 300-400 bucks, and finally if I want some decent interior art that will cost a couple hundred as well.

And there's a vast difference in quality between free art and high-priced art, as you might tell from this pic of a pivotal scene in The Pride of Parahumans that I received for winning a webcomic artist's contest.

I'd originally thought of making the interior illustrations stretch goals. But somehow I thought it wouldn't be appropriate to just ask to pay for a cover on a book that was already published and would cost just one week's pay for me.

The $100 I had budgeted for illustrations would probably only pay for one really, maybe I should put that towards the ads I bought.

Don't give up. Have you been able to spread the word about the project to forums that might be interested in participating, like furry social web sites?

Also, not to nitpick, but you might have been better served by making the cover art the main goal and set the interior illustrations as stretch goals, to give incentive for backers to try and increase the funding levels for greater rewards.
