What’s your definition of the right shoes? It probably contains some elusive combination of feeing good and looking great, but we all know how tricky that is to find at a reasonable price. Actually, at any price.
DO IT YOURSELF IF YOU WANT IT DONE RIGHT
If you watched the video, you know that I got into designing comfortable footwear when I started playing golf. It’s a walking sport that’s no fun when your feet hurt, and seriously no fun when your shoes are ugly.
I faced the same fit/style dilemma with golf shoes that I did with regular shoes, except that finding a golf shoe with style wasn’t an option at all. After buying nineteen pairs of shoes, and finding none that worked, I went ahead and designed what I wanted. And even though my golf shoes retailed at $229 a pair - on average $75 more than the standard offerings in the golf industry - the fit and quality, combined with a unique, modern style, made them worth every penny to my customers.
SO IS O.M.G. WORTH IT?
Yes, because it has the same combination of fit, function and style as my golf shoes. At an anticipated retail price of $179 after the campaign, O.M.G. costs $21 less than a comparable athleisure shoe at Cole Haan for $200, and $51 dollars less if you buy it during the campaign.
This is the sweet spot where good design meets good value. O.M.G. was created with the right proportions for a woman’s foot, so it’s insanely comfortable; it was made with the same attention to stability and support as my golf shoes; and its sleek profile and five awesome color combinations declare that style is non-negotiable.
CHOOSING BETWEEN COMFORT & STYLE IS A DEVIL'S BARGAINYou know what it’s like to stand in front of your closet, staring at a rack of shoes, knowing you have some serious walking to do, and debating what to put on your feet. You want to feel good and look good, but with what you own, you can’t solve the problem with just one shoe. Hello Imelda Syndrome. (I have it. Do you?)
THERE'S THE ORTHO COMFORT SHOE
If you opt for the orthopedic looking ‘comfort shoe’ you’ll pay at least $145 and feel good, but give up any semblance of style. For another $4, during the campaign, you can have a pair of O.M.G’s and look as fabulous as you feel.
THERE'S THE BALLET FLAT
If you opt for the unstructured ballet flat, you’ll pay anywhere from $52-$175 and look good - yes - but no structure means no support and your feet will pay the price. You’ve been there and know what I’m talking about. O.M.G solves that issue with it's supportive outsole and conforming body.
THERE'S THE WORKOUT SHOE
Then your workout shoes...bless them. They belong in the gym. You’ll pay anywhere from $99-$149 for them, but style-wise you get zip. I understand why women who work on their feet (teachers, nurses, waitresses) opt for these – comfort is paramount – but swapping one pair of workout shoes for a pair of O.M.G.s means you can express some personal style while you’re going about your business.
AND THEN THERE'S O.M.G.
O.M.G. was designed to offer you the same comfort as a workout shoe – but with the bonus of sleek, streetwise style. It’s a shoe that looks great on everyone and the five colors I’m offering will go with everything in your wardrobe.
THERE'S VALUE IN GOOD DESIGN
In the video I mentioned that I was recognized as a Rising Star by the fashion industry in 2014 for my golf shoe designs. I didn’t tell you that to brag, just to let you know that I brought the same focus on detail and style to O.M.G.’s design, because that's the way I like to do things.
There isn’t a shoe on earth that can boast comfort if the insole and outsole aren’t designed correctly for your feet. Our soles mold to and support your arch on the inside, and offer just the right heel pitch outside to make walking a blissful thing. The early heel strike is the key here.
COMPARE THE PRICE FOR DESIGNER SHOES
You can pay $200 for athleisure shoes by Cole Haan (which, if you didn’t know, is owned by Nike) or $149 for my O.M.G.s during the campaign.
COMFORT NEVER LOOKED SO GOOD
Whether you live in a big city, work on your feet, walk for your health, or just experience a high-octane lifestyle, O.M.G. will put a spring in your step (actually) and a grin on your face (guaranteed). This is comfort re-imagined – by a woman who has learned a thing or two about making shoes.
I STARTED MAKING SHOES BECAUSE MY FEET HURT
Six years ago, I set my sights on transforming women’s golf shoes, because I love to walk and couldn't find a single pair I could stand to wear for eighteen holes. (I have a bunion on my right foot. If you have one, too, you know how bad it can get.) Most golf shoes were hard as a rock and ugly as sin - which meant walking a course was outright torture on every level. I was determined to make shoes that fit right, looked amazing, and above all - felt great. It may not seem revolutionary now, but it was at the time.
Over the span of my career as a product designer, I’ve spent a lot of time in factories creating and producing everything from glassware to dinnerware to rugs and textiles - all sorts of products with technical exigencies. So, when the mission to re-design women’s golf shoes called, I knew I could tap into that experience and find the right people to help me bring my ideas to life.
WHEN IT COMES TO WOMEN'S FEET, MOTHER NATURE KNOWS BEST
While developing golf shoes, I spent a lot of time analyzing women's foot anatomy and eventually cracked the code for comfort. A woman's foot resembles a slice of pie when viewed from above, so to fit it properly, a shoe has to be constructed with a wider instep and narrower heel.
This simple, but critical, change in proportion makes all the difference in the way a shoe feels. And because looks do matter (we're women after all), the golf shoes I created prove that pretty can live side by side with practical - and that fashion can hold its sacred place in our hearts (and on our feet), no matter what we're up to.
PLEASE TELL YOUR FRIENDS
FROM A PRACTICAL STANDPOINT THERE'S NO BETTER PLACE TO BATTLE-TEST A WALKING SHOE THAN A GOLF COURSE
Whether you’re walking a golf course - or city street - the demands of comfort are the same. The idea for O.M.G. evolved from that fundamental principle. Hiking five or six miles on a golf course, up and downhill, tells you pretty quickly if your footwear is well structured, stable and proportioned correctly. We know ours is, because our customers tell us so all the time.
COMFORT RE-IMAGINED IN A STREET SHOE
It was the logical next step for me, to take what I learned from making great golf shoes, and create a sleek, chic, street shoe that feels as good as it looks. Coming up with a name was easy. Without the tiniest hint of hyperbole, I’m calling it O.M.G., for reasons you'll understand when you put it on. (Trust me on this one.)
The only real difference between golf shoes and street shoes is the surface they’re used on. Street shoes spend the bulk of their lives on pavement – which is hard and abrasive and begs for the extra cushioning that grass doesn’t. O.M.G.’s responsive outsole is designed specifically for that. Its cushy combination of molded polymers and rubber delivers superior compression and abrasion resistance - and the early heel strike it offers, a result of the unique heel pitch - make it perfect for the demands of a woman on the go. Like you. Like me.
THE RIGHT MATERIALS MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE TO A GOOD SHOE
The beauty and ease of O.M.G. are thanks, in part, to the two-way-stretch lycra used on the upper. (In technical parlance, that’s the top of the shoe.) For the same reason you opt for yoga clothes on the weekend, you’ll opt for O.M.G.s when you have errands to run or a date with your FitBit. They're light. They stretch. They feel really, really good - and look even better, thanks to the amazing leg line they deliver. (Show me a woman who doesn't love that!)
The suede details on O.M.G.'s toe and heel boxes multi-task just like we do: they give these shoes their structure and support - and their sleek, street-smart style. (More for your money the way I see it.) And since practicality reigns supreme in my world, O.M.G.s zip on. Forget shoelaces. Just step in, zip up and log those miles. There will be five wardrobe-invigorating colors to choose from (ruby, citron, snow, denim, and black), so depending on your mood and the day's agenda, you'll be covered in spades.
EVERY GOOD SHOE NEEDS GOOD TOOLING
Like all high quality shoes, O.M.G. requires precision tooling for production. Tooling is the single largest investment I have to make before a beautiful shoe winds up on your feet and that's why I’ve come to Kickstarter. From design to fabrication, it'll take our factory about fifteen weeks to make outsole molds for this shoe (in ten sizes) and then production can begin.
Outsole molds, in particular, are costly and demand a high level of craftsmanship to guarantee that every shoe coming off the production line is consistent, sized correctly, and made to the highest quality standards. There's no shortcut here. It has to be done right - from the start - so the product you end up with is everything you (and I) dreamed it would be: simply awesomazing.
DO YOUR FEET A FAVOR | PLEDGE TODAY
Our goal is to get these shoes onto your feet by early spring. O.M.G. can be yours for a very special price during the campaign, so don’t shilly shally. Do your feet a favor and pledge for a pair today (or check out the other useful and practical perks on offer that will help us reach our goal). And thank you, thank you, thank you. With your help we will continue to offer foot bliss to women everywhere.
Risks and challenges
Producing any consumer product takes a village, and we’re proud to say that our village is a highly skilled and experienced and committed one. It’s a modern village of like-minded individuals, scattered over the globe, contributing technical skills and enormous talent to the production of our golf shoes, and now, to this wickedly comfortable, great looking street shoe.
We’ve been making beautiful footwear for six years and have a very good idea of how things work - how long it takes to get tooling and molds made, raw materials converted, and shoes assembled. In a prefect world, we can nail the timetable down precisely. In an imperfect world, things can happen to cause delays. It’s important for you to know that we’re good at solving problems when they come up – because they do sometimes – and we always deliver what we say we will.
The best relationships – in business or otherwise – are those with transparency and trust at their center – where promises made are promises kept. Our pledge is to aim high, be realistic and tell the truth. We’re committed to quality, keeping in touch with you throughout the process, and delivering a wonderful product to you at the end.
