The Designer – August Larson is a bright new talent that Shadow Mountain hired in 2012. As an intern, August was given the task to create an original card game that reflected the characters, the places, and, of course, the magical candies from The Candy Shop War book series. Working with seasoned art director, Richard Erickson, as well as acclaimed illustrator Brandon Dorman, August created a game prototype that appeared to be an instant hit. The Candy Shop War Card Game is the first card game project that August (or Shadow Mountain) has developed for the national market. August is hopeful that Kickstarter gaming fans will see its potential.
The Illustrator – Brandon Dorman is an award-winning and New York Times bestselling illustrator. He illustrated the children’s picturebook The Wizard written by Jack Prelutsky that was a #1 New York Times bestseller. In addition, Brandon has also illustrated the covers of the New York Times bestselling Fablehaven series as well as the award-winning Candy Shop War series. You can see more of Brandon’s illustrations at www.BrandonDorman.com. Shadow Mountain is pleased to have him illustrating this card game.
Why Kickstarter? – Shadow Mountain is a publisher of family-friendly literature. The New York Times children’s fantasy series Fablehaven is its most highly-acclaimed series. The books and series in the Shadow Mountain children’s library lends themselves well to card and board games. They decided to test the gaming product waters with The Candy Shop War Card Game. Pending the success of this first card game, Shadow Mountain hopes to bring you more original games both based on some of their successful book series as well as new and original themes. Moreover, such beautiful art doesn’t come cheap. Brandon Dorman is a world-class artist and Shadow Mountain wants to provide stunning art for every single card. Your support can make this happen.
Risks and challenges
The game is already completely designed, we're simply waiting for illustrations to be finished. The printing will take place soon after the campaign funds, and we're scheduled to be ready to roll out copies in September of 2013.
There are little foreseeable setbacks. The only major thing that could happen would be a misprinting at the printer we're using to make the cards - however, we've worked with them before, and they are always on time.
