About Hoxton Mini Press
East London is one of the most creative, vibrant, ever-changing areas of London. It is full of untold stories and full of talented photographers, illustrators and writers to tell those stories.
We need your help to get our small publishing company off the ground and make our first TWO books.
We want to work with the best artists – established and upcoming - to make beautiful books that capture the quirk and character of this wonderful area.
We believe books should be beautiful objects. We believe local books can have universal appeal.
Two collectable series
We are creating two series, one purely photographic, one purely illustrated: 'East London Photo stories' and 'Illustrated East London'
Both series will be the same size and format, made to a beautiful (obsessive) standard and numbered 1,2,3,4... so that they can be collected as sets. Humour and quality will be key characteristics.
We have already produced the content for the first books in both series and now need your help to bring them to production.
'East London Photo Stories' series, BOOK 1
‘I’ve Lived in East London for 86 ½ Years’ by Martin Usborne. 80pp hardcover, quaterbound cloth spine, thick matt paper, gold foiled,145 x 205mm
Joseph Markovitch has left London only once, to go to the seaside with his mother. He loves Nicolas Cage, has five sugars in his tea, would have married a six foot two Hispanic woman but in the end had bad chest catarrh and never had a girlfriend.
Martin Usborne is a photographer and writer living in Hackney, East London. He has already published one book through Kickstarter: 'The Silence of Dogs in Cars'.
'Illustrated East London' series, BOOK 1
‘50 People of East London People’ by Adam Dant112pp hardcover, matt paper, gold foiled, 145 x 205mm
A a painfully acurate guide to the diverse, colourful and sometimes infuriating people of east London.
Although the drawings are reminiscent of old-fashioned comic books or Hogarth’s 18th Century prints, the individuals portrayed represent the very modern characters that make up the melting pot of East London.
Adam Dant is an internationally renowned artist who lives in Shoreditch, East London and has his work in many collections.
Each book will be available as a Collector’s Edition in a bespoke cloth-covered clamshell box featuring a signed and numbered print (print as shown below). Edition of 250. Buy the first editions here for less than in the shop. The earlier you pledge the lower the edition number. People that pre-order all six collectors editions (see below) will get the lowest numbers.
Posters and Prints:
A single print will be released in association with each book.
'Tea with Five Sugars' - Signed and editioned (ed of 150) by Martin Usborne, archival inkjet on 300gsm art paper, 12 x 16”. From the book 'I've Lived In East London for 86 1/2 years'
'People of East London' Poster print by Adam Dant (unsigned), archival inkjet on 300gsm art paper, 20 x 24” (NOTE: these are the approximate dimensions and the design may be tweaked - work in progress). From the book 'The 50 People of East London'
Future books are planned!
We are working hard on future titles. We aim to release four in 2014. If you want to be the first to get them for a great price or to get the very lowest numbers in the collector’s editions for less than in the shops please subscribe in the pledge on the right hand side. These are working titles.
Risks and challenges
Having run a successful kickstarter campain in the past (Dogs in Cars: A Photography Art Book) I know all about packaging and fulfilment. The entire content for both books has already been designed and we’ve spent forever choosing every last detail – we are obsessed with quality. A fantastic printer is ready to go and we will work with a London based mailing house (with whom we have experience and a good track record) to send out all the rewards before the end of 2013. While we can’t deny that sometimes things go missing in the post we will promise that if you let us know we will do everything we can to rectify the situation.
We’ve spent many late nights on this and it is our absolute passion to see this come to fruition. The only thing we can’t guarantee is the shipment dates of the future collector’s editions – we already have the artists chosen, the titles ready and expect the next two books to be printed in May and then a further two October 2014 but it might be a bit earlier or a bit later. Above all, we promise to stay in touch and keep you up to date about how things are progressing.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
