Thank you to all of those who've donated so far and allowed us to hit our initial do-or-die goal. We asked for a very low amount because we HAD to hit our goal in order to relocate and keep our 3 separate businesses open. Realistically, we need $50,000 to completely cover the next month or two of build out, lost overhead and wages, and re-opening costs. We're no strangers to DIY, but losing nearly two months of work, moving 30 tons of equipment, securing a new location and lease, and reprinting all of our promotional materials, all within a couple of weeks, is challenging for three small businesses. All additional funds will be headed toward the needed plumbing, electric, and construction work on the space.
Our Story to Date: Our building was bought out by a developer who initially told us they would renew the lease in March. Instead they terminated it. So we are raising funds to cover moving costs to a new space, in the two weeks they gave us, for all three of our businesses as well as build out. This situation also knocks the better part of a month or two out of all of our production schedules, which is devastating considering this is what keeps us all afloat. Fortunately, thanks to our community looking out for us, we have a line on a new space in the same neighborhood. And thanks to everyone here on Kickstarter, we can actually move in. However, as we mentioned build out is going to take a while and the city is in permitting for the electric so any additional funds will help us get on our feet and keep working. We can do this; we can save our businesses. But we need your help.
We have all separately been in business for a decade and share our maker space. We are heavily involved in skill sharing and providing services to our community networks, which include musicians, publishers, local businesses, artists, audiophiles, activists, zine makers, record labels, naturalists, writers, other small manufacturers and more.
Collectively we are: Eberhardt Press, an independent publisher specializing in craft printed materials for independent writers, artists, musicians, and local businesses. We provide technical support for other shops, equipment sharing for artists, and educational and occupational therapy for neurologically diverse students and artists. We support local suppliers and offer small and medium print runs at affordable prices for non-profits. Printed Matter, an independent screen printer supporting local businesses and community members, including national and international underground bands and record labels, artists, and students. We support and use fellow local businesses. We offer space and use of our equipment for other printers. We provide social justice groups and movements with discounted prices as often as financially possible. Devout Rcrds, an independent, underground metal record label and storefront. We provide art for album covers and screen printing for other bands and a community space for people to explore and purchase hard-to-find underground music. We also provide retail space for other local and international underground labels and allow bands to easily promote their shows.
We have about 30 tons of printing equipment to move including but not limited to three presses--a two-color offset, a restored Kluge platten, and a 19th century Chandler & Price letterpress, two industrial paper cutters, a collator, binder, an 8-arm M&R Gauntlet automatic screen printing press, a manual 4-arm screen printing press, a 17' Maxi-Cure screen printing oven, a washout booth, screen burner, graphics press, drying racks, all the inks, paper, business stock, design computers...you get the idea. All that along with Devout Rcrds entire record store and studio space. Any money we make over the $20,000 will put us on firmer ground and allow us the time to completely finish the build out and re-open sooner.
Risques et défis
The risk is real. The developers only gave us a couple weeks notice to get out after ten years of being good tenants. Given the rising cost of real estate and rents in Portland there are fewer and fewer suitable buildings for makers at higher and higher rents. We asked for a very low amount because we HAD to hit our goal in order to not close our sole means of employment indefinitely and then lose our places to live too. Realistically we need $50,000 to completely cover build out, lost overhead, and re-opening costs, but we're adept at DIY. As long as we can get back to work as quickly as possible, we can offer you an amazing deal for the low, low investment of $20,000. That $20,000 will allow us to secure the lease, hire the specialty trucks and equipment techs to safely and successfully move our presses, and get the record store going again. It gets us out and back to work before the landlords lock us out. Any funds above the $20,000 are going to the construction of a dark room for screen burning; the needed electrical installation for the larger presses; retrofitting the lighting; adding the required safety bracing for the computer loft; ventilation work for the curing oven, washout booth, and glue binder; and a whole host of carpentry work, paint, and sealants. New electrical boxes are being installed, walls need to be finished, floors need to be protected with appropriate materials under the presses, and we're trying to drop the air compressor for the autopress into the basement to mediate noise so we'll need longer air hoses and power cables for it, too.
Yes, we talked to brokers. Yes, we talked to lawyers. Yes, we talked to potential new landlords. The developers can legally do this so we've decided to fight the good fight by not giving them a chance at charging us for legal fees and instead focusing on what's best for us and the communities we serve. It took each of us decades to build our businesses to the point of being able to support others in their start ups. We refuse to be shut down and silenced in a mere matter of weeks.
Collectively our intersectional communities are coming together from all over Portland and beyond to help us save our businesses materially and spiritually. These challenges will be met as long as we the business owners can build the financial capital to secure the new lease and get back do doing what we do best--helping other people create their dream record, book, band art, or business merch.
