What exactly is Where the Red Fox Lies about?
What would happen if a person really did suffer from spontaneous combustion?
While this film does contain elements of horror, suspense, fantasy and sci-fi, at its core, Where the Red Fox Lies is an emotional drama about two sisters trying to reconnect and mend their fractured relationship.
Starring the extremely talented Rebekah Downs, Akasha Banks Villalobos & Brian Villalobos, the goal of this short film is to find real, honest moments between people who find themselves in increasingly fantastical situations.
How Your Donation Will Help:
$15,100 is the grand total needed to make this film a success. Of that, $9,500 is going to pay for the CGI and special effects that this story requires (i.e. all the fire, smoke, explosions, sizzling, charring, and bangs). The remaining funding goes towards paying for locations, camera and lighting equipment and crew, audio equipment and crew, sound mixing, creating an original score, and finally submitting to Film Festivals around the world, so that our short film can have its day on the silver screen with the potential for awards, accolades, and all the high-fives that come with that.
Every dollar is strictly budgeted and all cast, crew, equipment, and effects work is setup and in place waiting for your donation to help pull the creative trigger.
We know that it is possible to shoot a short film with zero budget and we have gone down that path many times and learned much along the way. This film is an opportunity for us to tell a different kind of story at a new level of filmmaking. Your donation will allow everyone working on the film the opportunity to operate and play in the same sandbox that major motion pictures play in. Doing this film the right way paves the way for everyone involved to elevate their passion and their career in film.
Thank you for your support! We understand that it is not always feasible to donate as much as you would like. We're starving artists and we get that. It's just as valuable to us when you share this Kickstarter Project on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+, as it gets us in front of more potential supporters and puts us one step closer to making this dream a reality.
Director, Jeff Ray
Hey guys, Jeff Ray here. Since we don't have some fancy publicity team writing this for us, I wanted to make sure you knew that 1) I am a real person, and 2) making this film is my passion. If you're reading this now, I honestly can't thank you enough for simply checking out this project in the first place.
When I was 12-years-old, my parents took me to see Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan and even though I didn't know what a film director was at the time, I walked out of that theater knowing that I wanted to be a filmmaker. That very same night, I got out my Dad's VHS Camcorder and a handful of green army men and made my first (admittedly terrible) film. And I've been making films ever since. Learning and evolving as I go along. What fascinates me most about cinema is the power it can have and how in some cases, it can move someone in such a profound way (like me with Saving Private Ryan) that it can literally change the very course of their lives. It's that notion that continues to motivate me to tell stories that are real and honest and true. Stories that will leave an impression on people.
I've developed somewhat of a mantra in my day-to-day—Do The Work -- and I've spent the last 11+ years with a camera in my hand, honing my craft. After shooting over 30+ music videos, countless commercials, and a string of super low budget short films, I know that this film is my opportunity to showcase what I've learned about the art of cinematic storytelling. This film is my opportunity to take something that I've felt intimately and share it with an audience in a way that might allow them to glimpse upon and feel it as well. That's what filmmaking is to me and I am eternally grateful to each and everyone of you for your support, no matter what level it came in at.
You can watch some of my most recent work at http://jeffrayshootsyou.com or email me with any questions you might have about this production (firstname.lastname@example.org).
Finally, I want to thank the talented actors, musicians, crew, parents, and friends who have already supported this project in so many ways. It's because of your ongoing support that I've been able to grow as a filmmaker and as a person. Thank you.
Risks and challenges
With a project of this size, there are always some Risks & Challenges. From my experience shooting video projects over the last 11 years, the main culprits are 1) running out of money and being unable to finish a project at the quality a film deserves, 2) having to skimp on "getting the shot" because of time constraints and just settling for "second best," and 3) keeping cast and crew in good spirits and encouraged to keep going, even when they're going on no sleep and are way over their paid time.
If any of these things is not dealt with at first sight, it can ruin the integrity of a film shoot and result in a subpar final product. This is obviously what we are trying to avoid and why we have put together a rock solid team that are not only passionate about film, but about making THIS film the best it can be. We've also put our green visors on and painstakingly crunched the numbers to make sure that we will be able to execute at a level of quality that we all expect with this given budget. We're fortunate to have "business minded" people working on our team who understand the importance of crossing every T and dotting all I's (we even through in some P's and Q's for good measure).
What happens if we DO go over budget, don't meet our schedule, or have a bad apple on the team? Everyone on our team is dedicated to putting in extra hours and labor and calling in every industry favor we have owed to us. And naturally, if all else fails, we'll all pull out the credit cards and hope for 0% interest financing. In the case of "bad apples" in the cast & crew, we're fully prepared to peer pressure them into stepping back into line and being team players, once again—but, we've all worked together many times over and we're anticipating an amazing shoot and experience.
I (Jeff here, again) have been fortunate enough to have companies like WalMart, Red Bull, Sony Music, and many many more put their trust in my ability to deliver for them. My music video work with artists like Sigur Rós, Blue October, Zeale, Sounds Under Radio and so many other great bands has allowed me to take a creative vision and tell visually stunning stories. Meaning—this isn't our first rodeo and we're well-prepared for the potential challenges.
This film is my passion project. There is nothing that I want more than to have this film tell a story that I can be proud of. When you act from a place of passion and marry that with a team of talented people who have proven their abilities time and time again, then a project like this becomes a truly collaborative effort, with everyone always encouraging the other to be just a little bit better.
We have an amazing team of producers, actors, cast, crew, marketing gurus, and operations wizards that are attached to this project. Together we will work as a unit to tell the best story we can tell and deliver to you a film that you will be proud to have supported.
