The Oculus Rift is the leading edge in virtual reality technology, and while games and simulations are exciting developments for it, we think it can be used for more than that, and Cinematography is a good place to start.
DreamRifter is our way of showing that Virtual Reality can change the way stories are told, much like how film completely changed storytelling from plays, or how talkies revolutionized silent films. True to the film industry, DreamRifter will be strictly a non-interactive viewing experience, albeit with the ability to jump through time like with any good video playback viewer.
Part of the reason why making movies for Virtual Reality is seldom attempted is because people keep trying to think up ways to do it with pre-rendered imagery. This is problematic, because it means the film would need to be rendered for every possible position and every possible angle for each eye that your eyes could be in for every frame of the video, and that would require far more memory than can be reasonably handled. Instead, DreamRifter is taking a real-time, CG rendering approach. We believe that computers are at the point where quality real-time rendered videos are a real possibility, and with this project, we're setting out to prove that in combination with Virtual Reality, it can be a truly unique and marvelous experience.
Once production is funded and completed, DreamRifter will be available to everyone freely from our website. We will also provide a non Oculus Rift version of the movie, but please remember that the full experience can only be obtained with the headset.
- $20,000 With all the tools that we could get with this, we will create a Mystery Theatre experience for you. This will be a mystery movie where you must examine deeply the scenes that you are put in to piece together the ending. At the finale, it will be up to you to select the culprit, thus choosing which ending you experience.
What the money goes to:
We're still in the very early stages for this project, mostly because we're lacking licenses to the professional tools as well as a few key products that we need in order to make this happen. Thus, primarily, the money will go to purchasing those necessary and useful tools that will allow us to provide a quality experience for you. In addition, It will also allow us to create a dedicated website and produce the rewards you deserve for your support. Last of all, it will go into any taxes, fees, and legalities that are involved with Kickstarter funding. Ultimately, we can't do this without you!
What is Oculus Rift:
The Oculus Rift is a rather innovative piece of technology. As a virtual reality headset, it’s a much more sophisticated than any headset before it. The Rift provides a full 3D, realistically sized view of the world around you, complete with 110 degree field of view and low latency head tracking. You can read more at the Oculus home page or their kickstarter page.
DreamRifter is, as one might guess from the name, a dream sequence. This Animated Short follows the dream of an elementary school girl who loves to read and loves fantasy novels.
The dream will reveal why she reads, and gives a small, sad glimpse into her world. Each scene within the dream is specifically designed to show off aspects of what cinema inside an Oculus Rift can do and be.
So far there are about six different scenes planned, spanning as many environments as possible in such a short space of time, which reflect action, war, friendship, and dreams themselves.
Each scene is a contrast to the others and will reflect different moods, effects, and camera work. It is meant to be thoughtful, playful, and adventurous.

Risks and challenges
Our biggest challenges will arise from scene set up and the actual character animations. But fear not! We are confident in our director and choreographer in her knowledge of all things theatre and film. Her bachelors degree in Theatre Arts and dance, with training in choreography, enables her to step up to the challenge.
For challenges regarding modeling and animation, any part of modeling, texturing, or animation we don't already excel at, our team is willing to build on our current skill-set and use the funding provided to obtain the necessary training and resources to do so, such as seeking out training videos and open license resources.
Sound effects may also be a challenging area to tackle, however, our composer and sound guy is also willing to do the research necessary to broaden his scope of skills and insure that the end result will be of satisfactory quality. We're also prepared to find and use purchasable sound effects.
Finally, shipping rewards to you is a foreseeable challenge that we're willing to accept. This may be our first time building a project of this magnitude, and our methods of composition may come across as unorthodox, but we are actively researching methods of creating and distributing rewards. We will be careful with how your rewards are created and make sure they're shipped to you as efficiently as possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
