Finders Creatures: A Magical Art Treasure Hunt
A traveling treasure hunt for sparkly creatures. A corresponding app serves as your real-time treasure map. Adventure awaits!
Finders Creatures is an ongoing, interactive public art piece about magic, imaginary friends, and treasure hunts. It’s been local to Portland (and recently won the Portland Awesome Foundation Grant!) but now it’s going on tour.
I sculpt small creatures, mold them, and cast them in various glittery resins. Each one is labelled and numbered with an official Finders Creatures seal. Then I run around like a crazed Easter Bunny and hide them. They are all in public, findable places: parks, neighborhoods, bookstores...some are hidden in plain sight, some take a little more sleuthing. Then comes the best part: you get to go find them. If you find one first, you get to keep it. All I ask in return is that you send me a picture, video or story letting me know it’s been found.
NORMALLY, this is the only way to get your paws on one, but as a special Kickstarter event, you can custom order one of your own right now! This includes choosing your beast type and color!
All the creatures that have gone out into the world are posted on the Finders Creatures app. It’s a Progressive Web App, meaning you can access it on a web browser at finderscreatures.com, download it to your home screen, and use it as you would any native app from the app store. The Finders Creatures app functions as a digital treasure map. It contains clues, pictures, and a live map with locations of the treasures marked. It also has a submission page where you can upload your finds.
Finders Creatures is a one-woman show. When I’m not in my studio covered in glitter, I’m a professor at the Pacific Northwest College of Art. That means I get summers off! This summer, I’ll be creating a special Kickstarter edition of beasties for this project, so this is your chance to snag one, whether by hook or by crook (or by Kickstarter... that works too). I’m going to take a road trip to bring Finders Creatures to some new places, because why should Portland have all the fun? I’ll be setting sail with my intrepid partner in crime and our two dogs.
And we’ll be traveling in style in our magical hobbit-hole on wheels.
Where we’ll be headed is yet to be determined. We’ll need to keep it on the west side of the country, but I’d like to see where we get the most interest. So, the more pledges from your area, the more likely we are to head that way :)
The Kickstarter will fund the basic needs of the Finders Creatures Summer 2018 Tour (sounds so official that way!) We plan to be out for 2-3 weeks, and the funds will cover gas, food and campsite fees, as well as the materials to create all the creatures. I’m planning on taking at least 200 on the road, and then will finish making all the pledge pieces upon our return.
This is your chance to get your own limited edition sparkle beast!
Why let the fates decide... claim your own now!
Risks and challenges
Well, there is always the chance that we will break down on the road, but we have good equipment and AAA, so we're hopeful that won't be a problem.
There should be no issues with getting rewards out; I'll be making them all summer, and all rewards are items I'm familiar with making and producing.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
