Join us in bringing to LIGHT Downtown Ypsilanti! Last year, WonderFool Productions teamed up with the Ypsilanti community to host the first ever ypsiGLOW: a community-built art event that brought thousands of people downtown for a night of dancing, interactive art activities, black-light stations, street performances and more!
This year, WonderFool Productions needs your help to GROW the GLOW! In the weeks leading up to the event, the windows of Downtown Ypsilanti will - quite literally - GLOW. From the Kickstarter Campaign funding, WonderFool Productions will hire local artists to paint murals or build art installations in windows. The ultimate vision is to have every window in Downtown Ypsilanti, from local businesses to abandoned spaces, filled with art before the event.
Join this campaign and help us generate economic and cultural impact downtown, as we directly support local artists, businesses, and community culture with the funding we receive.
Why is ypsiGLOW important?
At ypsiGLOW there are no stages, no set design, no schedule of activities. Instead, people from all corners of the community come together on the street, sharing and celebrating their creations and the creations of others.
At the first ypsiGLOW, with the help of 69 community partners and creatives, over 1,200 people of all ages and backgrounds danced, delighted, and celebrated their community together. A local business owner remarked, “I have been to a lot of events, and a lot of first time events and you should be VERY proud of what you were able to accomplish. I also feel like it was the most integrated event I’ve been to in Ypsi (or any where really) and that made me happier than anything.”
There is immense power in ypsiGLOW because it champions diversity and connects ALL people from the community in collaborative, and shared expression. We need your support to bring this vision to life!
ypsiGLOW is created by artists, community groups, businesses, and YOU (the community).
- Artists activate windows, create light-centric pieces for the event, and teach community art-making workshops
- Community groups, schools, and institutions participate by hosting satellite workshops unique to their programming and members
- Businesses participate by activating their windows for the event and hosting workshops
- The community is invited to make a costume at home or attend a workshop to make a luminary or costume to bring to the event
This truly is an event built by Ypsi, for Ypsi.
Who are we?
Creative-enablers // Merry-makers // Community-connectors
WonderFool Productions - a nonprofit art organization - sets the stage for community-built art experiences. Although ypsiGLOW is a new event, WonderFool Productions is not a new organization. WonderFool Productions has developed two culturally iconic events in Ann Arbor: FestiFools, which just celebrated its 11th year, and FoolMoon, which turned 7.
In 2016, WonderFool Productions was asked to plan a pilot event applying their successful community-arts model to the Ypsilanti community. What resulted was a community-wide celebration, with over 60 community partners who brought the inaugural ypsiGLOW to life!
Kickstarter uses the power of community support to bring community art to life. By supporting initiatives like ypsiGLOW, you are helping unite communities through positive expression and shared experiences, where people from all ages and backgrounds come together to create, delight, discover, and wonder together. We invite you to join this community-built project through Kickstarter, making it a global effort to empower and connect communities in need.

Risks and challenges
In the eleven years of planning outdoor events, weather has been our greatest foe. That being said, we are Michiganders... Weather can't stop our GLOW. This was confirmed in 2011, when thousands of people danced in a hail storm during FoolMoon.
Ensuring an inclusive event is our greatest challenge and our greatest priority. The success of the event is dependent on everyone feeling welcome, invited, safe, and culturally comfortable. By engaging with a diversity of community groups, keeping the events free, and offering transportation to groups in need, we hope to achieve this feat.
Finally, as a small but mighty team of volunteers and one staff person, we have to be aware of our capacity constraints and not stretch ourselves too thin. We are relying on the support of the community to bring this event to life.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
