Historically, the philosophy of basketball sneaker design has been to provide a cast-like shoe that locks the foot down. However, the foot is a complex, mechanical structure that moves in multiple directions, so this can cause problems when cutting and moving laterally in a rigid shoe. Specifically, the tarsal bones are a set of five bones in the midfoot that coordinate together as a group. The way they fit together is unique, as they lock and unlock themselves to provide movement of the foot in different directions.
To solve the problem, Dynamight provides an articulated midfoot, improving the range of motion of the sneaker. This helps players cut more quickly, naturally, and efficiently. And it’s super comfortable. Dynamight also uses a plate in the midsole that is engineered for torsion while still respecting a player's need for stability and propulsion.
Design + Materials
A clean, timeless design - the aesthetic quality of the sneaker is a nod to the old school and to John Wooden’s era. But make no mistake about it, the sneaker is made for the modern player. We’ve used top grade materials and tech for every detail, from the synthetic canvas to the merino wool in the collar.
Merino wool is earth’s performance material, but it hasn’t been used much for basketball sneakers. The fabric is sustainable, odor-resistant, regulates temperature, wicks away moisture and resists stains and dirt. And it’s super comfortable and beautiful. The wool collar feels amazing and you can rock the Coach Woodens on and off the court.
Coach Wooden detailing.
These limited edition Coach Woodens are available in two colors: black and white. We will not make these versions again after Kickstarter.
When you make a sneaker for a man who instructed his players how to properly put on socks, you better damn well get the details right. His attention to detail was legendary and why we really took a lot of care designing the John Wooden shoebox as part of the overall experience.
John Wooden is a legend on-and-off the court and is consistently ranked as the greatest coach in the history of sport - 10 National Championships, 4 undefeated seasons, and an 88 game winning streak. But even better than his untouchable feats is the timeless wisdom he left behind that continues to inspire millions of people. Woodenisms like "failing to prepare is preparing to fail" and “ability is a poor man’s wealth" have become part of the American lexicon.
The Coach Wooden Hip Hop Tribute - To honor John Wooden’s love for poetry - his favorite teaching tool - we are challenging people to use the poetics of hip hop as a way to remix his wisdom like never before. The best rhymes, riffs or raps will win a variety of prizes. For details, go to Heroyk.com/hiphop. Enjoy the submitted work below:
