Air Dash Online (ADO) is a new platform fighter inspired by the Super Smash Bros community, emphasizing an original roster, competitive play, and your input! We aim to maintain the genre's fundamental gameplay, while introducing new mechanics and re-capturing the speed of Melee. Fight your way up the ladder with a diverse cast of characters, ranging from an electrified punk to a dual wielding yo-yo slinger. Your battlegrounds are the slums of a stormy dystopian metropolis, a secret workshop hidden away in a clock tower, and many more!

Inspirations: Our goal is to empower you by creating characters that move exactly way you want, even at a moments notice. We expanded on the movement mechanics from Smash Bros. Melee. We also took elements from Guilty Gear like air dashing and anime inspired art direction. We love the aerial combat featured in Dragon Ball Z anime. It inspired us to create air dash canceling and an air-tech mechanic that add a unique twist to aerial combat!

Online Matchmaking: The opponents you are matched up against will be near your skill level every step of the way. Fighting your way to the top of the rankings will allow you to play against the top competitive Super Smash Brother Melee players, until a new generation of air dash players is born. 

Platform: Play on Windows, Mac OSX, or Linux with your favorite USB controller, fight-stick, or keyboard.

Objective: The overall objective is similar to Super Smash Bros. To win matches you must knock your opponent off the stage and keep them from returning. The more damage they receive, the farther they will be knocked back from additional attacks. When a player is hit out of the screen, they are vaporized and lose a life. The gameplay starts to branch off into new territory as you use air dashes to control space, juke your opponents, and navigate the stages with style.

Combos: Your ability to combo depends on a variety of conditions: your position relative to your opponent, the amount of damage they have taken, and which attacks you are using. If you really want to punish your opponents, you will need to master on-hit canceling. This will allow you to land combos that may seem impossible.

Design: We designed the game to allow more character freedom via attack canceling, air-techs, and more. Some of the mechanics are experimental, so we need your help to decide which ones will make the final cut. We are always interested in hearing new ideas from you, which is why we wanted to put the game on kickstarter while it's still in a malleable state.

Air Dash: We believe freedom of movement is an essential part what makes platform fighters so engaging, so we built on that with an air dash mechanic. It came to be such a prominent part of the game’s design that we decided to put it in the title. 

How we are incorporating air dashing:

  • Air dashing can be done in any direction!
  • Each character's air dash will have a unique effect.
  • You can cancel the air dash with an attack.
  • Air dashing replaces the air dodge seen in the Super Smash Bros. series, and will never leave you tumbling helplessly.
  • Air dashing can help you return to the stage, allowing new recovery mix-ups.

We streamlined some mechanics, with the intent of making movement feel more natural. For those familiar with Melee, we implemented "smooth wavedashing" which allows you to wavedash with variable timing.

On-hit canceling: Air Dash Online is designed to reward accuracy and timing. Upon landing an aerial attack, you can cancel the remainder of the attack's animation with a jump or a dash!

Design: Unlike other platform fighters that are using known mascots, we have the benefit of designing our characters around playstyle and moveset concepts. 

Physics: We took many characteristics into consideration while designing the physics for each character. Weight, air control, and fall speed are the top three attributes that affect how a character feels and plays. Character weight determines how much knockback you receive when hit. Air Control is how much you can influence your horizontal movement while in mid-air. Fall speed determines how fast the character will naturally fall.

Two of the characters, Tesla and Chai, are fully modeled and playable in our prototype. With your help, we can take the remaining characters (and more) out of the concept phase and into the game.


Alternate Skins: 

While some skins will simply be an alternate color scheme for the character, others will be completely new 3D models. Below is an example of the latter. Grim Chai exclusive character skin is available only to Kickstarter backers!

The stages in Air Dash Online feature a range of locales from the electric slums of Elevated Mood to the elegant clockwork of Counter Logic. Stage layouts are designed to add a variety of challenges to the combat without disrupting the balance of  competitive matches.

 Musicians: We enlisted the help of two electronic music artists in writing Air Dash Online’s soundtrack. Our hope is that the quick pace of the music will encourage your fingers to move quickly too.  

Sabrepulse is one of the pioneers of the chipbreak genre. He combines 8-bit chiptunes with various forms of electronic dance music. 

DJ Aura Qualic specializes in electronic music, but also creates trance, orchestral, and pop tracks.

JV5 Games is made up of people directly from the smash and fighting game communities. We are working hard to develop a game that can carry on in the spirit of Super Smash Bros. Melee. Development, so far, has been entirely self-funded. We need your help to make Air Dash Online into the game that it deserves to be. While some of the basics are covered in our prototype, we still have a lot to do.

Risks and challenges

Creating a new game is a huge undertaking, and fighting games are no exception. A single character from an advanced platform fighter can have over 100 different animations! Don't worry, we have studied fighting games quite extensively and will make sure the animations are frame perfect.

Online gameplay is difficult to implement in any game, but in fighting games, lag can make the game unplayable. We plan to use GGPO net code as a solution for the lag.

Delays are naturally a risk, as they are for most Kickstarter projects. That said, we believe our progress so far speaks to our ability to get the work done. Building two characters has also given us an idea of the time and resources it will take to complete the initial roster. We will always keep you up to date with development streams on Twitch.tv. We love showing the technical side of game development and interacting with everyone in the stream chat while keeping you updated.
