About

The summer sun hangs high in the afternoon sky as you rest your hand on the grip of your six-shooter and thumb the hammer. You stare down your adversary across the table, trying to get a read on what he plans to do next. There’s a twitch in his eye. From under his hat, you see a thin trickle of sweat, and you know you have him. The time has come…Skin that Smoke Wagon…Control Devil Tree Station through the black power fueled application of lead!

In Devil Tree Station: Skin That Smokewagon! each player takes the role of either a Wanted gang outlaw or justice driven Posse member in a lead filled shootout in the dirt covered streets of Devil Tree Station. Out think your adversaries through decisive actions and straight shooting. Each version of the game supports up to four players, but feel free to combine two games to have up to eight players fight for supremacy!

In the Wild West, there’s no sitting on the fence, you’ve got to pick sides: Wanted or Posse. Having just robbed the bank, the Wanted gang is trying to adios town! The Posse stands in the way and a raging shootout ensues.

Posse and Wanted Character Cards
Posse and Wanted Character Cards

Players begin the game with a Character Card from the four Posse and four Wanted Character cards denoting their allegiance and ability played in front of them. These can be drawn randomly or selected, it’s up to you. Next players take six die. As everyone acts simultaneously, so there’s no need picking a starting player unless playing in Shootout mode.

Devil Tree Station plays best in Team mode, Posse versus Wanted, however it also plays as a wild, chaotic Shootout where it’s every hombre' for themselves:

  • Team: Players split between Posse and Wanted with players selecting Character Cards from the appropriate set. In a two-player game, players choose two character cards each to allow for more variability and strategy. A three-player game consists of two against one with the single player utilizing two character cards.
  •     Each team shares a four card set of Action Cards (Move, Cover,         Shoot, Aim)

  • Shootout: All-against-all, last man standing gun fight with players choosing Character Cards from all remaining Character Cards regardless of allegiance
  •     Combine sets of four Action Cards to create an Action Deck:
  •         2 Players: 1 Set = Action Deck
  •         3-4 Players: 2 Sets = Action Deck
  •         5-6 Players: 2 Sets = Action Deck (requires 2 games)
  •         7-8 Players: 3 Sets = Action Deck (requires 2 games)
  •     The First Player is the one who can spit the farthest

The goal of the game is simple: Stay off tombstone hill and be the last team or gunfighter standing. To knock a player out of the game all you have to do is pilfer/steal their dice, however doing this forces you to risk your own. Devil Tree Station uses a single type of die.

Custom die...You get 24!
Custom die...You get 24!

Each turn, players select an Action Card from their Action Deck and place it face down next to their Character Card. If playing Shootout mode:

  • First Player selects 1 Action Card from Action Deck, discards 1 card, and passes deck left
  • Other players select 1 Action card and pass deck left
  • Reshuffle Action Deck at end of turn and Player to the left becomes First Player

Next, players separate their dice into two piles. Simultaneously, players place their face down Action Card on top of one of their piles of dice to designate them as their Action Dice. These die allow you to steal die, but are also very vulnerable to theft. The die not designated as Action Dice form a Reserve Dice pool and are much less vulnerable to skull drudgery and pilfering.

Starting with the fastest player, fewest Action Dice, combatants:

  • Reveal Action Card
  • Designate an opposing player as their Target
  • Target reveals Action Card
  • Current player roles Action Dice
  • Fastest player who hasn’t gone yet goes next ; This can change due to dice stealing so be sure to recount!

Steal one dice from your targets Action Dice Pool for each die face that matches the icon at the top of your Action Card and place it in your Reserve Dice Pool. Horseshoes are wild and can equal any other rolled die face except Aces. Aces are a little different in that they allow you steal a dice from any dice pool in the game, even the Reserve Dice!

Note: Players can only steal dice from Characters, never given freely or shared…even if the same player plays two characters. Sharing dice is like letting someone who lost an arm have yours…ouch!

Not so fast pilgrim, there’s a couple of twists. How well do you know your enemy? If your Action Card takes advantage of your targets Action Card, you steal half their Action Dice rounded down and add them to your Reserve Dice Pool before rolling...brutal!

For example, if you play the Aim Action Card and target an enemy with the Cover Action Card you steal half their action dice. Note that only the attacker steals dice, so if we reverse the cards with you playing Cover and your target plays Aim, they DO NOT steal half your Action Dice…after all you beat them to the draw!

If you play the Aim Action Card and your Target's Action Card is Cover, steal half of their Action Dice rounded down before you even roll!
If you play the Aim Action Card and your Target's Action Card is Cover, steal half of their Action Dice rounded down before you even roll!

Finally, each Character Card is exceptionally skilled at one action that allows them to re-roll any or all of their Action Dice. This, however, presents a “tell” for opponents, as they know the Action Card most likely to be played: Do you go for the re-rolling advantage and risk a big loss for a big gain OR do you pick another Action Card to throw off opponents? How good’s your poker face?

Colonel Wayne Appleby can reroll any or all of his Action Dice when he plays the Move Action Card.

  • A good interlude between longer games
  • A fun evening
  • (The game accommodates) bluffing and deduction, to understand the opponent's behavior (please excuse our horrible translation skills:)

We are all game designers at heart, but for some of us it's also a career. I've been making games since I was 10 and have been making them professionally for over 20 years. I've even taught game design for the past eleven years and I can't think of any better way to share my creativity and bring a smile to the world than through games. Recently, I decided to found Dice Made Me Do It! and begin making fast playing, custom dice and card games. I guess you can say the fever took with a vengeance, which resulted in this Kickstarter.

Dice Made Me Do It! is proud to present Devil Tree Station, a Wild West Team and All-Against-All Shootout. The game retails for $25, but for $24 you get it before the stores and shipped to your house for free in the US! For our non-US backers we've discounted shipping by the cost of US shipping, so you're not loosing out on savings. It's an amazing deal that only gets better as the Kickstarter picks up steam and gains backers as all stretch goals are automatically added to pledges for free once unlocked. Help us spread the word and increase the value of your pledge!

Risks and challenges

As with all products, there are a number of potential, but not unmanageable risks.

Devil Tree Station has been thoroughly playtested and deemed ready to ship. We've also had it reviewed by two different sources ensuring a high quality product with excellent gameplay. Of course releasing it to the masses is always a major test. Rest assured we stand behind our games and gameplay and foresee no issues.

While the core game is complete, the stretch goals require additional art. We've scheduled ample time and have numerous exceptional artists lined up to provided these, but as with anything scheduled in the future there are always risks. Fortunately, our artists are known commodities and we know what to expect so we do not foresee anything major.

Manufacturing is the last potential issue and while Dice Made Me Do It! has not used this manufacturer before, a number of other companies our size have and they highly recommend them. We always anticipate some issues with new relationships and have added a cushion of time to deal with them.
