Microscope opened a new vision of the micro-world. It is a dream not only to see but also to record what is interesting. In the early days, what observed under microscope was recorded by hand-drawing. Nowadays, some of the complex microscopes were equipped with microscopic camera head. But it usually is very expensive.
We are glad to initiate this Kickstarter project for an alternative solution - iADAPTER.
What is iADAPTER?
It is an affordable solution to convert any traditional optical microscope into a digital one. In addition, it is very easy to use.
It is not just an adapter, it is a total solution. The pack includes the iADAPTER itself, a μRuler for scale-bar calibration and an APP i-SCOPE dedicated for microscopic photography.
Scale-bar can be added to each micrograph through the dedicated APP i-SCOPE.
Key Features and highlights
- Build with solid material
Different from other adapters, the iADAPTER itself is made of air-craft grade aluminum alloy and engineering plastic. The aluminum alloy body enable a solid structure and stable support, while the engineering plastic parts provide a good protection to the microscope and smartphone to prevent them from scratch.
It is very important for the stability when shooting closeups and micrographs. Thanks to its solid structure and material, iADAPTER is very stable to hold the device to microscope.
- Nano-suction pad for easy operation
An innovative material - nano-suciton pad is used to hold the phone. This made the iADAPTER very easy to use - just point the phone to eyepiece till see a picture, then simply put the phone on the nano-suction pad - so no need for time consuming adjustment.
Different from conventional adhesive, the nano suction pad mimics gecko's foot-pads, it has thousands of micro air pockets functioning like micro suction cups to hold the phone. Every on and off application will leave nothing on the phone. This newly developed "nano suction pad" is residue-free, non-tacky and repeatable.
This nano suction pad is also easily to be cleaned by touching it with a PSA tape. So it could be used again and again. Here is a demo that it was contaminated by some dust (wheat flour), after cleaning with a PSA tape, it resumed its function as fresh.
- Also compatible with miniPad
iADAPTER is designed to reach max compatibility. Take the advantage of structure and nano-sucction pad, it support to device of small size to larger size, i.e. works well not only for smartphone but also for miniPad with a larger screen.
Regarding microscope, it works with eyepiece of a diameter up to 50mm, this includes most of major brand and model of the commercial available microscopes.
- Dedicated App i-SCOPE
In additional, dedicated App i-SCOPE will meet professional microscopic observation and recording demand. Scale-bar on the micrograph could be tangled on/off and it could be calibrated to assure accuracy. Up to 5 different magnifications could be set for easy use when switching among different objectives on microscope.
- μRuler to ensure scale-bar accuracy

- High picture quality
There is no additional optical elements in iADAPTER, so it takes the perfect performance of the microscope optics. Small pupil design avoides stray light and the solid material keep it stable enough for high quality micrograph. This is essential especially for shooting micrographs with high magnification power.
The picture below shows a performance comparison. They are the micrographs of CCD chips recorded at high magnification (1000x). The left one was recorded with a dedicated camera head from NIKON as benchmark. It shows that the one recorded with iPhone has a more vivid color.
- Patented design
The patent sketch is shown below. It has 3 freedom of position adjustment and a group of screw to tuning the centering of the optical axis. This patented design provides an easy operation to achieve perfect micrographs in less than a minute.
In summary, iADAPTER is designed both from hardware and software to meet the high demand, either for education purpose or professional application. It provides an high quality yet affordable solution to record digital micrograph on any microscope.
In addition, it is very easy to use. If someone ever took a picture through the eyepiece by holding the phone with hand or other methods, it is a pain to hold the phone stable, or time consuming to adjust the phone to the right position. Now iADAPTER solves these pains and problems.
Examples of application
- Upgrade the traditional optical microscope to a digital one, let the old microscope to go with this digital era. For example, to add digital observation and recording function to this slit-lamp microscope.
- Collect micrographs on smartphone for further analysis, either locally or via a cloud server. As an example, iADAPTER has collaborated with MOMALA for field diagnosis of malaria in Africa.
- Easy demonstration for education purpose, the micrographs is able to be shared both with students and teacher on the screen, in addition it can be further projected to wall for easy class demo and live video play.
- It is not only good for microscope, but also good for telescope.

Risks and challenges
We have established manufacturing capability through accumulated experience in the development and manufacture of our other products. We carefully select suppliers and OEM of key parts, keep the cost, process and quality under control, and develop good relationships with our partners.
Development of this product has gone through prototyping, evaluation and improve the concept cycle many times. As a Kickstarter project, the product has not yet been proved by market. Though we have successful record of Kickstarter project and put a reasonable buffer to our project plan to meet the time line, there may be difficulties and problems need to overcome on the road. This is learned from our previous new product development and manufacture. We put a lot of effort, time and passion on this product and we will be engaged in it to solve the problem.
