Gold Star Children
By Mitty Griffis Mirrer and Mark Monroe, writer of The Tillman Story and The Cove
A feature-length documentary about American child survivors of war from two generations. These are the children left behind when a parent dies while serving in the military. The documentary takes a look at the consequences of war from a different perspective, it is told by the children, America’s Gold Star children.
It’s a story that breaks the silence for generations of Gold Star children, young and old who have lost a parent.
A nine-year-old girl whose father was killed in Iraq and a 40-year-old woman whose father was killed in Vietnam, this documentary opens a window to a unique part of the American story – one that is happening now, and frequently forgotten.
A Gold Star Child is someone who has lost a parent to war.
For too many wars, American families have coped with loss on their own.
Today, children of war from an older generation reach out to mentor a new generation of children.
Director/ Producer Mirrer seeks to capture the personal journey of dealing with the war death of a parent then and now. The Trailer was recently featured as a special on national CBS news. Click below to view the video.
Our Goal For the Film
We need your help to finish this documentary film.
The goal of documenting this community of our children of war is to give voice to children then and now, and by doing so, help future generations of children who suffer the costs of losing a parent to war. It is through this connection if loss, that we begin to see our nation’s Gold Star children healing one another.
Simply put, we want to get the film out to as many people as possible. A national broadcast, American military communities around the world, Universities and schools, all could benefit from this story
It is a film with a wide reaching message about the redemptive power of sharing and the resilience of our nation’s Gold Star children, who continue to carry the greatest burden of our country’s wars. A 60 minute version of Gold Star Children premiered at the GI Film Festival in May. The shorter version of the film was also screened at the Rhode Island International Film Festival.
Since then, Goldcrest Films, who also represented The Tillman Story, Restrepo and Battle Company, has committed to helping this film reach a broader audience once complete.
Thank you for your Donation and Support!
Kickstarter is the largest funding platform for creative projects in the world. Every month tens of thousands of amazing people pledge millions of dollars to projects from the worlds of music, art, film, technology, design and other creative fields.
Every kickstarter project must be fully funded before its time expires!
What Happens If We Don’t Reach Our Goal
If we don’t raise our goal, we don’t get anything. Donors pledge the amounts, but don’t actually pay until the goal is reached and the funding deadline has passed.
We want to avoid this so please spread the word. Everything helps!
When we meet our goal we will begin the final stages of production, post production, securing national broadcast and creating DVDs.
