GOAL ACHIEVED...AND BEYOND!
(5/27/12) ~ Thanks so much to all my generous backers. I really appreciate old and new friends pitching in to help fund my book. I reached my goal very quickly because of you.
Just because the goal was achieved early doesn't mean new backers can't contribute. Any further funding will just go to covering the other expenses associated with the cost of publication. And this is a fun way to pre-buy your copy of "Snap Decisions".
Camai! (an Alaskan "hello")
Greetings from Alaska! I’m Jim Lavrakas a retired news photographer with a 30-year career at the Anchorage Daily News.
I made some great photographs in that time and the very best of them are in the 150 pages of a book I’m self-publishing called Snap Decisions. It's the recounting of the journey that took me from a raw street shooter to a veteran community photojournalist.
Along the way I won a bunch of awards including sharing in a team Pulitzer Prize in 1989. But it was always about my community, and as I grew as a newsman I grew up in understanding the people, places, and events that I met and experienced. The events I photographed changed people's lives. The people changed me.
I wanted to make Snap Decisions unlike any photojournalism book I've seen before. Each two-page spread is themed and a story unto itself. There are no captions. Instead I've included a short narrative about the images and what was going on when I took them.
Sometimes it's about a person, what was happening in Alaska at the time, what my assignment was, how I got the photo, or what was going on in my head. It's very personal.
But it's not all breaking news. There's plenty of Alaska. What an incredible place for a photography career. I was working at National Geographic and never realized it!
I've already paid a designer, production agent, and a distributor but the main cost of this project is the printing. My goal of $6000 would go entirely towards that need.
As is true of all Kickstarter campaigns, if I make my goal I receive the funds. If I don't, your pledge is refunded (it isn't a "slush fund"). So please help if you can.
Pledge amounts start at $5 and go up to $150 for some great stuff. A personalized signed copy of Snap Decisions is just $35. However much you decide to give you'll always receive credit for believing in my project.
Snap Decisions is softbound in an 8x10 landscape format that opens to 8x20 inches.
Quyana! (an Alaskan "thank you")
Snap Decisions has been a labor of love. I just want to share the greatest photos of my long career at the newspaper with Alaskan friends, and new ones like you. Thanks for any support you can give.
