In September I will open Handcraft Studio School, a studio dedicated to teaching, promoting and preserving handcrafts through connecting artists and craftsmen with the community. The idea evolved from various themed craft nights my good friend and I have thrown over the past year and a half.
We gathered our friends together and led projects from making wreaths to constructing kachina dolls. These nights became an opportunity to share our knowledge, use our hands, express creativity, and extend our sense of community. After hosting a number of these evenings and witnessing the joy brought to all involved, I saw the benefit a permanent craft space would bring to the local community.
I have secured a beautiful studio space in Emeryville California, however, it is not yet the functional community studio I envision—this is why I am asking for your help...
Our goal is to run five classes during our opening month in a working studio. The five classes we are offering are: Mini Piñata Making, Creating with Pompoms, Intro to Letterpress, Flower Arranging, and Intro to Calligraphy.
I want to create a studio that is inspiring, beautiful, functional and attracts both women and men to gather together and learn the art of handcrafts. I have researched and chosen the items needed to complete the studio and am ready to place the orders when money is raised. The funds will be used to purchase sturdy, well designed furniture, including crafting tables, stools, chairs and shelving. Funds raised will also help in purchasing quality tools and materials such as scissors and drying racks. The studio space needs a few improvements like proper lighting so classes can be held both day or night and a staircase to access the storage loft.
Any funds raised beyond the goal set will be used to create a design and 'how-to' library and purchase more tools and materials to continue upgrading the space.

Risks and challenges
One possible challenge I see is not being able to get all the furniture and materials into the studio in time to run classes our opening month. We might have to be creative about seating, tables, etc. I am committed to both opening the studio, holding our first five classes and outfitting the space with the quality furniture, materials, and tools I see necessary in creating an outstanding art space.
I have slowly started marketing for the studio and letting the community know about the upcoming classes. Without student interest these classes will not run. I have more work ahead of me to create interest in both the new studio and the classes available.
