AWESOME JAPAN Co. Ltd introduces high quality Japanese products, services and creative ideas to people around the world. We are launching a project to distribute T-shirts featuring Hiroshima’s famous character, “Momiman.”
Hiroshima is a famous tourist area visited and loved by both Japanese people and visitors from around the world. What is Hiroshima, and what is “Momiman”?
Many people know Hiroshima as the primary target location for the first atomic bomb during World War II. Despite its dark past, the city is also famous for its fascinating scenery and broad history. (In fact, more than 58 million tourists visited Hiroshima in 2012!).
In 2012, CNN reports says that more than 360,000 visitors from abroad came to Hiroshima, and tourists from the U.S. were the biggest group among them.
Local delicacies in Hiroshima include Momiji dumplings, Hiroshima-yaki (the Hiroshima version of Osaka`s signature food Okonomiyaki), and firm, plump oysters which are the pride of Hiroshima.
Hiroshima’s Itsukushima Shrine, one of the Three Views of Japan, is the most beautiful place in Hiroshima. The view changes depending on the tidal conditions so tourists can enjoy it many times over. The shrine is also well known for the friendly wild deer that live around it.
The local government is actively promoting the city, and its PR video is gaining popularity all over Japan.
“Momiman” is a hot subject in this culturally-rich city. Momiman is a regional mascot character featured on the package of Momiji dumplings*. It is a collaboration by Goto Seika Co. Ltd, a traditional Japanese confectionery over 90 years old (since 1922), and “Hiroshima Otaku Map,” which distributes otaku-themed news, comics, cartoons and games related to Hiroshima.
*momiji: Japanese maple A dumpling, or manju, is a traditional Japanese pastry. A momiji dumpling is a baked pastry in the shape of a Japanese maple.
Momiji dumplings are popular pastries sold for around 80~90JPY per piece in Miyajima followed by other areas within Hiroshima, and they are always on the top for Japanese souvenir popularity rankings. Usually their fillings are red-bean paste, but there are other flavors such as custard, chocolate, and green tea.
Have you ever heard of regional characters? Local governments and groups are developing original characters for local events and souvenirs to attract fans in order to support the regions of Japan. The two characters for “Momiman” are Momiko, a miko (shrine maiden) of Itsukushima shrine, and Alfred Goto, a deer living in the shrine.
These characters were designed by Ms. Kawasaki, the manager of Hiroshima Otaku Map. Her talents aren’t limited to drawing cute characters -- she is also a famous cosplayer, among many other things!
AWESOME JAPAN, publishes “Momiman” comics illustrated by Ms. Kawasaki. Visit our free website to check them out!

We will create “Momiman” T-shirts to share Hiroshima’s moe character with you! We need your support in order to produce comfortable, quality T-shirts. We will bring you first-rate T-shirts using quality materials to produce excellent image quality, texture, durability and functionality.
(This T-shirt is made mostly from cotton and polyester, and the fabric is durable. Esgraphic Inc. will be in charge of production and printing. This printing company has a great reputation, and is currently expanding its business rapidly in Japan.)
In the center of the T-shirt is “Momiko”. She is drawn by Ms. Kawasaki in a style that shows a hint of the 80’s.
The red / pink color tone depicts the color of Japanese maples, and there are Hiroshima-related words written in kanji (Chinese characters) around the illustration of Momiko. Currently, this T-shirt is only available in Japan at a shop in Miyajima city, Hiroshima. Support us and make it available all over the world!
