Our goal for this project will be to do the English translation, subtitling and to put the film on DVD/Blu-ray. We ask you for your support and the chance to make this a reality. But! There are Stretch Goals aplenty and we wish your help to make Coluboccoro the best it can be!
Thank you! Coru!
Hello Everyone, Kenji Itoso here. Thank you very much for taking a look at my new project. Before we get to that though, I would like to introduce myself to you. Throughout my career, I have produced and directed live action films, music videos and commercials, but the heart and soul of my work is with animation. I am also a university professor, where I teach and do research on film and video techniques. I learned the art of animated film direction studying under Hayao Miyazaki of STUDIO GHIBLI and Satoshi Kon of MADHOUSE. From that experience I had hoped to one day bring to life an animated film with my own vision for the world. Not stopping there, I wanted to rethink the whole process of animated film production, so I started jumped in feet first to create my one man original work, COLUBOCCORO.
There were many obstacles that had to be overcome for sure, but with a little help from my friends, I managed to get about 22 minutes down on film. COLUBOCCORO won awards at film festivals throughout Japan, and was also screened at the Cannes International Film Festival and many other film festivals around the world.
I could not have been more nervous through it all, but I’m glad to say I persevered to make the film I wanted to make. My gratitude goes out to everyone who has given me their support! We are not done quite yet though, and I want to welcome everyone to come and be part of the COLUBOCCORO story.
The big reason I chose Kickstarter as the outlet for this film was for the great reception and support that I received from everyone abroad on my previous project here on Kickstarter, Santa Company. Santa Company was my first Kickstarter, so of course there was a lot I was not used to, and not being that good at English, I’m sure people had their doubts about the project, but it turned out great and am so thankful for everyone who helped make it happen.
The other reason is that both the previous project, Santa Company, and this project, Coluboccoro, are part of a larger work. They may seem unrelated at first watch, but with a good look you will be able to notice the common themes I have woven into them. I wanted to make this trilogy of short anime fantasies to form one, overarching work by having them share these underlying themes. While I think they are all enjoyable in and of themselves, by viewing them from the lens of the three as a whole, it will offer new discoveries, making the combined work all the more entertaining.
And since the Kickstarter community helped make the first film a success, I would like nothing more than to make all three films with you through Kickstarter.
It is a time not of the now. At the birthplace of culture and religion. Where science has evolved amongst a gathering of races and people both high and low. In a town, with a ruler. Like any other town, unlike any other ruler.
Suzu, the girl’s name is. Her parents lost to her at a young age, her days strict with an upbringing befitting of the now and future sovereign. But doubt had crept in for the life she lived.
So out she stole one day, to that place one must never set foot, to the Forbidden Grounds. Far above the town the Forbidden Grounds lay.
And there, Suzu finds a seed, the likes of which she has never seen before. What kind of seed could it be?
Wondering, she wanders back and waters the seed… And there, it sprouts right before her eyes, a mysterious creature popping up from the dirt!
A startled Suzu timidly speaks, “…and you are?”
“Colu!” it peeped.
Suzu returns to the Forbidden Grounds, to find out just what the creature is. Beyond lays a world she has never seen, the secret of the town waiting hidden.
And just like that, destinies are laid bare. All possibilities become one thread, spinning the ultimate truth. Will Suzu take hold and lead it to the end?
