YONMOQUE is an abstract strategy game for two players. The goal of the game is to make 4 in-a-row with some twists. It was invented in 1997 by LOGY GAMES creator Mitsuo Yamamoto and has been very popular, selling more than 3,000 copies in Japan.

We are creating a new Japanese edition for this campaign. It is designed with two old Japanese soldier figures, 武将:Busho and 忍者:Ninja figures on the pieces represent opposing sides.

Two figures are printed on the pieces reversibly.
Two figures are printed on the pieces reversibly.

I have been thinking about fine tuning the Japanesque board design to enhance the Japanese theme. I am making improvements in three areas:

  • 1: The five neutral tile spaces will be modified so that they are identifiable as neutral when a piece is resting on them. Currently they may appear white which could be confusing. Thank you Robert F. for your feedback on this change.
  • 2: Ninja figures will be added on the blue tile spaces.
  • 3: Japanese 漢字(Kanji)characters will be printed at the four edge spaces. The Japanese words 四目抽象戦略盤上遊戯勝者成配置動自駒四目 mean YONMOQUE is an abstract strategy board game, winner makes 4 in a row by placing and moving their own pieces.

The small dots design on the neutral tiles comes from an old Japanese clothing design 豆絞り(mameshibori). I have included an image of the new design below. As always, I welcome your feedback.

Best Regards, LOGY GAMES creator Mitsuo Yamamoto 2nd./October/2016

The game is very simple and compact.  Simply get 4 of your pieces in a row either horizontally, vertically or diagonally, on the 25 squares of the board.  The game is very challenging for either player to win because a piece's move is defined by the color (blue, white or neutral) of the square on which it rests.  To keep competitive balance between blue and white players the number of squares of each color on the board is not the same and the blue player always plays first. This last rule is important to maintain competitive balance.  Only by moving one of their existing pieces (not placing a piece) can a player flip opponent pieces and/or win the game.

Components

  • 12 pieces are reversibly composed with two colors blue and white or two figures;武将:Busho and 忍者:Ninja (Japanesque edition). Blue is assigned to Ninja and white to Busho.
  •  A 5×5 grid board is composed with eight blue, twelve white and five neutral tiles.

Game concept

  • Game goal is to place 4 pieces in a row - either horizontally, vertically or diagonally by moving your own piece.
  • Yonmoque is a two player game.

How to play

  • 1: Decide who will play blue and who will play white.
  • 2: Divide the 12 pieces evenly between the two players.
  • 3: Blue always plays first.
  • 4: There are no pieces on the board at the beginning of a game and the blue player starts by placing a piece anywhere on the board.
  • 5: The white player then places a piece on the board.
  • 6: On the blue player's second turn, he/she can either place another piece on the board or move their piece already on the board.
  • 7: There is no rule regarding how many pieces a player must play. Of course, each player must PLACE at least one piece on the board.
  • 8: Play continues until either a player has won (4 in a row), or a player has lost (5 in a row)
  • 9: A player may only win by moving an existing piece to make 4 in a row. A player may place a piece on the board to create 4 in a row but this does not win the game.

PLACEMENT & MOVES

There are only two things that a player can do on his/her turn. Place a piece on the board (if pieces are available) or move a piece that is already on the board.

  • PLACEMENT: On a player's turn, he/she may place an un-played piece on any unoccupied square.
  •  MOVES: On a player's turn. he/she may move any of his/her pieces that are on the board. Each piece may move one space in any direction (identical to a King in Chess). However, white pieces on white squares may move along the entire chain of white squares (like a Bishop in Chess). The same rule applies to the blue pieces on blue squares. The symbol squares, at the center and on the corners, are neutral (neither blue nor white).

FLIPS

If a player moves a piece into a position that surrounds an opponent's pieces in a line( horizontally, vertically or diagonally), the opponent's pieces are then FLIPPED. For example,

  • in the figure above, if blue moves his piece as indicated by the arrow, then the two white pieces will be bounded on either side by blue pieces. Therefore, when blue makes the above move, the white pieces are flipped and they become blue.
  • FLIPS only occur when a player makes a MOVE. A player may not cause an opponent's pieces to FLIP by PLACING a piece on the board.

We made two kinds of ceramic tile magnets featuring Japanese old soldier figures 武将Busho and 忍者Ninja.

  • Our next goal is to fund over $5,000. If we meet that goal, all backers will receive one of the ceramic magnets. (random selection)
  • Our final goal is to fund over $10,000. If we meet that goal, all backers will receive a set of both magnets.
Ceramic tile magnets are 0.8in round.

We had a YONMOQUE tournament on 17th September 2016 at Fukagawa IPPUKU game cafe in Tokyo Japan. 12 players played free matches and the two top scoring players, a senior drafts player and  a young boy fought evenly in the final match. The Senior drafts player managed to win the game and obtained the champion's trophy.

Everyone played YONMOQUE after brief instruction including children and seniors.

All of our games are hand made. Ceramic tile paintings are fired at high temperature by kiln and all other components are hand made even though it often takes additional time and effort. We like to make games with a warm hand-made feel and we take great pride in the artisan quality of our games.

Risks and challenges

All games are craft articles made by hand. High demand could possibly delay our reward delivery schedule.
We are sure it is very valuable and unique game despite somewhat expensive international shipping from Japan. You could not get YONMOQUE from any other place in the world.

All rewards are shipped by Japan Post’s “international E-packet” which is registered as air small packet. You may receive tracking information from Japan Post. The $7 and $10 paper board rewards are shipped by ordinary air mail. Backers will not receive tracking information for this reward.

VAT & Tariff
We provide our games by international shipping from Japan, your country may impose VAT and import tariff on the products according to its own policy. Since we are not up to date with the information about VAT/tariff policy of each country, it is recommended that each backer check with their country's policies beforehand. (Usually it is not imposed when the total price is below a certain threshold.) The typical procedure is that the backer pays these fees to the delivery company personnel when receiving the product.
