About this project
Our goal is to complete development of the Bypass Foil Turbine working model by October 2015. Development of this model turbine has started, but we need your help to complete it.
The Bypass foil I have designed is a housing for a hydrokinetic turbine. This housing is a revolutionary design that fundamentally changes the way power is produced.With the Bypass foil, power is achieved from the current as it passes around the devise, which in turns draws water through the turbines.
This design causes an increases in the natural current velocity and enables a blocking / debris divert-er to be place directly in front of the river turbine housing.
What is different about the Bypass foil from other forms of “Green Energy producing devises?
The Bypass foil turbine is the first commercially viable, clean, renewable energy source that has the potential to compete with, and eventually replace fossil fuels and nuclear energy. Currently other forms of energy produced by wind turbines, solar panels and some hydro-kinetic energy devises, has a higher cost to the consumer than that of fossil fuel.As long as this is the case, fossil fuel will dominate energy production. Realistically, to have an impact on the use of fossil fuels, Green energy must be commercially viable.
What makes the Bypass foil different than other “In-current” hydro-kinetic devices?
Twice the velocity, eight times the power!
Most of today’s In-current hydro-kinetic electrical generators are basically an adaptation of some form of wind power generator.The same principles of fluid dynamics apply to both regardless of the density of the fluid. However when it comes to the production of In-current hydro-kinetic power, fluid density and velocity can have both a positive and negative impact, depending on the design. The Bypass Foil is design to take advantage of the greater density of the water (water is about 800 times denser than air) and to use simple fluid dynamics to increase the velocity of the water as it flows by the turbines.(When water velocity is doubled the power generating possibility is increase by a factor of 8.)
How do you increase the water’s velocity?
The Bypass foil is a revolutionary In-current hydro-kinetic design which can nearly double the natural flow of a river or ocean current. Unlike conventional In-current hydro-kinetic technology, which depends on head pressure to push water through a venturi or around a fan, the Bypass Foil draws water though turbines from the back of the apparatus which surrounds the turbines. In laymen terms, water is pulled out the backside of the foil and not pushed in the front.This change in design yields a huge increase in net energy.
The operational principle of the Bypass Foil combines the fluid dynamic concepts of an aircraft wing and a jet pump.
Aircraft wings provide lift through the creation of low pressure areas. The low pressure areas are created by airflow over the airfoil; as velocity increases, pressure decreases.The low pressure areas on a symmetrical foil are on both sides of the foil. As fluid flows past a symmetrical foil, the highest velocity and lowest pressure develops at the widest location on the foil.As a note: The low pressure area above the conventional aircraft wing can create enough force to lift airplanes which weigh as much as 500,000 lbs. The factors which contribute to this lifting force are both speed and density of the fluid.
The beauty of the Bypass Foil is in its simplicity.The Bypass Foil creates low pressure areas similar to those which a symmetrical wing develops, through the same mechanism of increasing the velocity of flow. These low pressure areas are the key to the operation of the Bypass Foil.
The simple design has an opening on each side of the foil at these low pressure locations. Fluid, which enters from the leading edge of the foil, is drawn out of the side openings at the same velocity as the natural current which is passing the foil.Since each side of the Bypass Foil has an opening equal in area to the opening on the leading edge, the velocity of the water from the leading edge through the foil must double to meet the flow demand of the low pressure areas on the sides of the foil.
For the production of energy, fluid, from the leading edge, is channeled around rotating or spinning apparatuses, which are used to generate power. In the examples below, a cylinder design is shown. After passing these apparatuses water is channeled into two separate arteries that lead to the areas on each side of the foil with the greatest water velocity and the lowest pressure.
The rotating apparatus used to generate power is placed within the foil at the location of the greatest fluid velocity.
Mathematically, the amount of power from a stream or current is a function of the density of the water and the speed of the current, cubed. The Bypass foil has the ability to nearly double the natural water velocity, thus nearly octupling (increasing by 8) the possible amount of in–current hydro-kinetic power produced.
In an aquatic environment the Bypass Foil could be secured to bottom of the body of water, or suspended from the surface, and can operate at any depth beneath the surface to take advantage of underwater currents. In addition the Bypass Foil can function completely or partially submerged in water. This permits placement of electrical components above the surface of the water for certain applications.
When completely submerged, the Bypass Foil would function without interference to surface vessels. In addition, hazardous weather such as hurricanes would have little effect on the submerged foil. An added advantage to the Bypass foil is that it would have very little, if any, impact on aquatic animals.
The width of the device is only limited by the size of the body of water and extent of the water flow. Thus the wider the device the greater amount of electrical power generated. The Bypass Foil design permits the machine to be placed one behind the other without losing efficiency. If the Bypass Foil continues to perform as expected, the future of hydrokinetic power will be changed forever. The ability to double the current velocity and thus increase the power generation by 8, would make in-current hydro-kinetic power generation economically feasible throughout the world.
Use in rivers as well as the Ocean
As mention about this design enables a blocking / debris divert-er to be place directly in front of the river turbine housing. This enables the devise to be used in a harsh environment on remote rivers. Recently several attempts to provide hydro-kinetic power to remote villages along the Yukon and Nenana rivers in Alaska were attempted by an In–current technology which merely adapted various wind generators for underwater use , (I.E. Eagle AK, Ruby AK ) The designs tested had no efficient means to eliminate hazards of debris in the river.To function correctly, these turbines required an unobstructed direct current flow.Unfortunately, this prevents the ability to block out the debris which may be in the current.The inability to block this debris had devastating consequences, as shown at the Ruby test site.

What are the environmental impacts?
Very little.The rotation of the turbines in water is relatively slow and the design permits smaller aquatic life to pass through without harm while larger marine life could easily avoid the Bypass foil.The locations would be away from reefs or other sensitive areas. One of the other unique adaptations of the Bypass foil being considered is the use of hydraulics to transfer energy from the Bypass Foil to electrical generators on the shore. The hydraulic pumps remove the requirement for expensive underwater electrical generating systems. This would be a closed system using ultra-pure water as the hydraulic fluid. The use of water as hydraulic fluid is a precaution in case of leaks.
Is Hydro-kinetic power better than Solar or Wind power?
I am a big supporter of solar and wind power when installed in appropriate locations, but if the sun is not shining or the wind is not blowing you are not generating electricity. Because of the inability of Solar and Wind to provide consistent and reliable power, the cost per KW is very high compared to Fossil fuels energy generation. Ocean currents are always flowing at a constant velocity and ocean current turbines are always generating electricity at a steady even rate. Ocean currents provide reliable, consistent energy. The design of the Bypass foil increases the efficiency of the turbines and is projected to beat the whole sale cost of electrical energy produced by fossil fuel generation. Once Green Energy is shown to cost the same or cost less than fossil or Nuclear energy, the world will abandon the polluting ways of the past and embrace the new, clean, energy of the future.
The Bypass foil has the potential to provide reliable green energy which is commercially viable.
By contributing you are enabling the research and testing of the revolutionary Bypass foil to continue. In addition you will be part of the solution to global warming and to reduce pollution from Fossil Fuels and potential multi decade long contamination from Nuclear Energy. The success of the Bypass foil would not only provide energy reliability but also energy independence. Ocean currents are virtually perpetual and are not effective by weather.

As traditional energy costs continue to rise, exploring underwater ocean current for energy becomes an increasingly attractive alternative. The power of the currents in the ocean offer limitless, renewable, green, and clean power. Enormous potential remains untapped.
We are at the stage in which we need to prove the amount of power the Bypass foil is capable of producing.To do this we need to build a working model which can be tested in a controlled environment. Currently we are seeking contributions for the construction of the working model and associated testing equipment. The amount were seeking is $12,000. These funds would be used for the construction of a test model to include the building of two turbine wheels, obtaining torque measuring devices and fluid flow measuring meters.
I believe the Bypass foil has huge potential. My intention is to partner with the University of Alaska (U of A) Department of Energy.The U of A has done extensive research with Hydro-kinetic energy and has express an interest with my design. With your help, the data collected from the working model will provide the essential information needed to obtain a private or government grant.Money from this grant will be used to build a full size functional Bypass foil for testing and use at one of the many remote Alaskan villages. These trials would be the prelude to open Ocean In-current testing. Once we reach this goal, we will have the compelling evidence showing that In-current Hydro-kinetic power is environmentally compatible, cost effective, and is a viable alternative to fossil fuel and nuclear energy.

Risks and challenges
As recent as January 23rd of this year, scientists have called on people to demand action from their leaders to curb fossil fuel pollution and to stop developing ever more modern nuclear weapons that are endangering the planet.
The scientests are not saying it is too late to take action, but the window for action is closing rapidly. The world needs to be awakened from its lethargy and start making changes,
"Efforts at reducing global emissions of heat-trapping gases have so far been entirely insufficient," said Richard Somerville, a member of the Science and Security Board, Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, and a distinguished professor emeritus and research professor at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California San Diego.
"Unless much greater emissions reductions occur very soon, the countries of the world will have emitted enough carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases by the end of this century to profoundly transform the Earth's climate," he said, noting that 2014 was the hottest on record and that the tipping point of ice loss in west Antarctica has been reached, meaning the melt is now unstoppable.
The climate changes that human are driving "will harm millions of people and will threaten many key ecological systems on which civilization relies,"
