About

My name is Dell Cullum and I live in East Hampton, Long Island, New York. Everyday for the past two years, I've witnessed the birth of each morning either standing at the shore of the Atlantic Ocean, hidden in brush or sitting in knee high water waiting for God's creatures to welcome the dawn. Whether it's the winter seals at Montauk Point, the whitetail deer at the Indian Wells, or the diving terns at Napeague Bay, all the wildlife greet each day in their own unique way, bursting with energy from the magnificent rise of the sun.

I've found this part of the day to be the most important in my life. The air is filled with only the sounds of nature. Twilight casts visions of night separated by the coming dawn visible to the naked eye. Dawn brings forth colors that please the eye in a most glorious way. Clouds of various shapes and sizes often add to the infinite canvas and weather conditions spin the wheel of possibilities. The sun rises, spreading rays of light and energy to all living things that are accepting of it's power, all along illuminating the final and greatest natural work of art that only God could create. Wildlife know this all too well and are most active welcoming the new day, I've taken many photographs of wildlife standing at the edge of a bluff watching the sun slowly rise above the horizon, much like a human, much like myself.

These days with work and the fast paced lifestyle, many people don't have the opportunity to enjoy this precious time of the day. They have to get their energy gradually as the day progresses or from a $5.00 bottle of WAKE ME UP juice!  Many have to search for time to relax ...reflect...get back in tune with one's self. It's also unfortunate that times are becoming more violent, stressful, and ugly. I know this all too well as I am a credited photographer in the book, "Here Is New York: A Democracy of Photographs" for the pictures I shot during and after the 911 Tragedy. Since that point, I've been determined to express only beauty in my work and where better to find beauty in such desperate times than in Nature itself. I traveled around the country photographing some of the most beautiful places and wildest of wildlife. I spent 4 years in Idaho shooting the great geysers of Yellowstone, sunrises in the Teton Valley, grizzly bears, wolves and bald eagles. These are collections I hope to show in future exhibits.

I returned to New York two years ago after several years of traveling. I found myself back in the very place I was born and raised, East Hampton. I immediately returned to old familiar places, but this time seeing them in a new and enlightening way. I was raised on these ocean shores, yet I can't remember EVER watching the sun rise from them. When I finally did two years ago, I was instantly awakened. I could barely believe what I was looking at and even more perplexed that no one was around witnessing this visual miracle. I became obsessed and wouldn't skip a sunrise in fear of missing another breath taker. What I've documented over the past two years is a photography collection of some of the most beautiful sunrises my eyes could stand to see. As my quest progressed, I began to notice various species of wildlife acting in unique ways. Almost as though these acts were only performed when human eyes were absolutely not present, and in a secretive way. Driven by the light of day, or lack of on several occasions, the wildlife appeared to be the most active and most interesting. Therefore on days when weather held back the sun or directly after a grand sunrise, I began tucking myself in remote locations and becoming part of Nature as it's world unfolded before my lens. Time and persistence offered me the opportunity to bond closer to several animals I had been photographing throughout the season or the year, and with their trust they granted me spectacular performances for my eyes alone.

This collection of shots taken entirely in East Hampton, NY reminds us that beauty is there to be found. It's not hiding and is not far away. It's also to bring attention to the importance of nature & environmental conservation, as well as the beauty of wildlife not only in East Hampton but around the country and around the world.

My objective is to hold the most colorful, natural and unique art exhibit ever displayed in the Hampton's (not an easy feat). I wish to mix the best pieces of my collection in large sizes on various printing formats (acrylic, aluminum, bamboo, giclee' prints, canvas, etc.) carefully and precisely back lit for a full and vivid visual effect, along with several moving digital frames previewing other collections, accompanied by natural sounds, and some very special and unique surprises. My ultimate objective is to share my work with as many people as possible, in hopes that it can bring beauty, happiness and peace into their lives. I spent a lot of time putting together special rewards for those who back my quest, but the biggest reward is knowing you help me spread the beauty that is our home, here in East Hampton. I will absolutely acknowledge everyone who participates and helps make this Exhibit a reality both at the event and in a future book project of the same title. A Forum has been chosen, a plan made, all that remains is funding to produce (print) my work on large format mediums and bring to reality an exhibit that will spiritually move you. Thank you ALL so much !!!

Risks and challenges

I believe I have ALL angles cover. I have a professional art director who's confidence and track record exceeds any I've worked with in the past. A location has been chosen and the special features which will make this exhibit unique are all on hand. Three separate printing giants are standing at the ready to create my works on various mediums. The exhibit pieces have already been personally chosen by myself and ready for print. Only the funds are needed to get the wheels turning and begin the process. The only challenge is reaching the goal.
