What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

About

The project, and this fundraising campaign, will build and fly the first Aeropup in the US. There are Aeropups built and flying in Australia and I, as the sole dealer in the USA, want to introduce this wonderful plane to America. This first Aeropup airplane will be used to obtain certification and license to sell from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Once certification and license obtained, then we can offer this airplane, in kit form, to the US market. This airplane kit will be one of the lowest priced kits in America. It has a perfect safety record (over 50 in active service) in Australia. Become a part of the start of something big in US aviation! This first Aeropup will be used a demonstrator for project supporters and potential customers.

Why was the AEROPUP designed? ...the logic was laid down by us at the outset that the new version MUST be 1) Safe, 2) Stable, 3) Strong, 4) Practical, 5) Comfortable, 6) Affordable. We accomplish all of this with a "tractor" style (engine in the front where it should be), twin fuel tanks in the wings (puts the fuel in the safest place instead of in the fuselage with the pilot), tail wheel, and "tandem" seating on the twin seater. The high wing configuration, provides extraordinary stability due to the fuselage "hanging" off the wing platform, at the same time giving the best possible vision to see what you are flying over, who wants to be looking at an empty sky above all the time? STRENGTH was built in via the CHROMOLY steel tube fuselage which effectively makes a crash cage around the occupants, this has the inherent ability to give a bit like crumple zones on cars. Precut ply ribs slide over the spars and are glued and riveted in place with no cables but strong tubular diagonal bracing which cannot stretch. It's a very PRACTICAL plane because it has fast folding wings that can be folded to legal trailering width within a few minutes without tools and without disconnecting any fuel lines or controls. This makes it ideal to store or hanger where space is at a premium. COMFORT is important if you are on a long haul, the last thing you want is to be fatigued when you get there. We designed the seat with a laid back rear which is very comfortable, and a control column reminiscent of the Pitts Special, we made the control surfaces very large so that control is direct, precise and predictable, we made the fuel tanks large enough to give around 4 +hours of flying time. All in all one great little plane with the ability to register VH or Ultralight and not take forever to build! Your donation provides necessary capital to introduce this revolutionary airplane to the world market. Your valuable donations will enable to us to build the construction jigs that will enable rapid creation and assembly of parts and earn FAA certification. Basically, these jigs are “copy machines” for airplane parts. Additionally, your donations will enable the funding of initial equipment and tooling automating the aircraft construction process.

We feel this project is important because almost everybody loves to and wants to fly. However, flying today is too expensive. A typical airplane cost $95,000 or more and several hundreds of dollars per hour to fly. The Aeropup, a flying machine created with 3-D printing technologies, special manufacturing techniques, and more will allow the public to purchase a “ready to fly” airplane for $39,000 or a kit for only $17,000….cheaper than an automobile! Be a part of the airplane revolution…thank you for your donation.

Risks and challenges

There are some risks in that the ability to offer this aircraft kit is dependent upon earning certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This certification is required prior to selling kits in the US. However, I believe the risk of non-certification is low because 1) there are over 50 Aeropup aircraft currently flying in Australia, 2) FAA standards certification requirements are similar to those in Australia, and my manufacturing processes are being supervised by experts familiar with FAA certification requirements. I have very high confidence of successfully earning necessary certifications to offer this great product to the US.
