To design and create a high quality, ultra performance, desktop physics toy at a reasonable price. Physics has always been a science discipline that has fascinated me. Along with my passion for design and engineering, physics toys were a natural fit. The double pendulum is one of my favorite physical systems because of it's sublime simplicity which turns to chaotic kenetic movement with just a little help from gravity.
Spinpal DP is the perfect addition to an office desk, kitchen counter, living room coffee table, or bedroom night stand. It is sure to start a conversion and capture the attention of all who see it in action.

The first scientific investigations of the pendulum was around 1602 by Galileo Galilei. Later, the pendulum clock was invented by Christian Huygens in 1658 and became the world's standard timekeeper, which was used in homes and offices for 270 years. The pendulum clock was able to achieve accuracy of about one second per year before it was superseded as a time standard by quartz clocks in the 1930s.
Pendulums are also used in scientific instruments such as accelerometers and seismometers. Historically, they were used as gravimeters to measure the acceleration of gravity in geophysical surveys, and even as a standard of length.
The first prototype was used to test functionally and feasibility. This prototype was also used to dial in the optimum pendulum mass and length ratios.
The second prototype was water jetted out of aluminum plate and then anodized black. This prototype was costly, too light, and was missing the simplicity I was looking for.
The third prototype was used to start testing a new base and single post design. This was a move in the right direction for a much cleaner look.
The fourth prototype was used to test a metal base. I knew I wanted a heavier, more aesthetically pleasing base design. I began testing the base footprint and weight. I wanted to minimize both as much as possible. The support post, eyelets, and connecting rods were also changed to add contrast between all the components and to reduce weight.
The fifth prototype was used to test the smaller, more minimalist base. This base was much lighter and had a more realistic footprint. The base was still aluminum but was clear anodized instead of a mill finish.
The sixth prototype was used to further test a smaller, more minimalist base. This base was much heavier but had a smaller footprint. I wanted to reduce the area taken up when placed on a desk or counter.
The seventh and final prototype had a base that ended up being a great balance between footprint and weight. It also had the contrast and simplicity I was hoping for.
