David Harrower's acclaimed script Blackbird, was commissioned for the Edinburgh International Festival of 2005. It went on to London's West End (where it was the Winner of the Olivier Award for Best New Play 2007), and two New York productions. The play has been described as “A searing theatrical experience” (The Guardian), and “Theatre at its most elemental” (NY Times). “Harrower has the focus of a song writer, and his exquisitly wrought monologues are like odes” (The New Yorker).
The script is intense and dynamic, but its challenging subject matter is not for all audiences. Described bluntly, Blackbird is the confrontation between a woman (Una) and the man (Ray) who sexually abused her when she was twelve. Harrower somehow manages to make this story not only compelling, but achingly human. The script does not flinch from the reality of a situation that is the stuff of nightmares for most parents. Both characters revisit their past (not entirely willingly) because this event, this “relationship” has so completely crafted who they are that they simply have to face it, and each other.

Risks and challenges
What are the risks?
Well, first, it's important to know that this show is not conditional on our hitting our kickstarter goal. I am fully confident that we will, in fact, meet our goal, but if we do not, the show will go on.
There are, of course, risks to the performance. Probably the biggest risk is that an actor could get ill or otherwise be unable to perform. If that happened close to performance, we might be forced to cancel some or all of the run. A hurricane or fire could destroy the venue I guess, but that's kind of unlikely. Then again, I mean, if the Cubs can win the World Series, anything can happen right?
Our biggest challenges will (I hope) be artistic. This is a difficult piece. We have an incredible team, with veteran actors, and I feel confident can meet the demands of this script, but it won't be easy.
