The first definitive feature documentary on Competitive Eating. Following the world's top eaters through it's most controversial year.

The first definitive feature documentary on Competitive Eating.

"Hungry" takes a journey into the world of competitive eating following the world's most famous eater, Takeru Kobayashi, as well as other top competitive eaters to explore the politics, history and controversy of this misunderstood sport.

The film begins on July 4th 2010 with Kobayashi being arrested at the Nathan's Hot Dog Contest at Coney Island after a vicious contract dispute with the organization known as Major League Eating. And all culminates exactly one year where in a highly publicized spectacle on a NYC rooftop, where Kobayashi attempts to reclaim his hot dog eating greatness.

Funds are needed for completion of post production. The film will aim for most major festivals as well as theatrical release

WHY COMPETITIVE EATING?

Since Nathan’s staged it’s first eating contest in 1916, competitive eating has continued to steadily grow in popularity. This year, with the “Kobayashi Scandal” and unprecedented media coverage, the spectacle has never been greater.

Worldwide Phenomenon

Thousands of contests worldwide each year -$300 million in ad equivalency & $10 million dollars in yearly profits -Millions of fans worldwide (50,000 in attendance at Coney Island in 2011)

Social Implications

Our story explores issues that reflect some of the biggest issues in society at large. We explore whether or not extreme eating should be considered wasteful and unnecessary in a time of extreme worldwide hunger and poverty. We uncover a corporate entity creating wealth from under-compensating their eaters; a parallel to the corporatizing of the world economy today. As well as taking a look at this year’s first ever all-female Nathan’s Hot Dog competition.
