The Golden Skillet

Mission statement: The Golden Skillet is a culinary archive based on the American grandmother. Their recipes and stories provide a window into their lives and personal histories.  We are documenting their old-world culinary skills and family traditions.  Our aim is to step into the kitchen of your grandmother, to observe and learn from her recipes, culinary techniques and expertise, to get to know her history, her stories, and her kitchen practices.  In order to pass this knowledge on to future generations, we capture her enthusiasm, and passion for food on film and inspire others to make culinary treasures of their own.  We seek to preserve these invaluable skills and to use the Golden Skillet as a reference and archive which will be accessible online and possibly as a web or T.V. series.

In this day and age, with modern culinary conveniences at an all time high, we intend to learn from the days when making a snack was harder than pulling something out of the freezer and popping it into the microwave.  What did our grandmothers serve their guests and family at social gatherings?  How did they prepare for a special meal or even just dinner for their immediate family?  What culinary advice did their mothers and grandmothers impart to them?  What dishes from their ancestors did they inherit and hope to pass on to their next of kin?  Our goal is to prevent the loss of these unique individuals’ knowledge and traditions.

Deborah and Danielle act as the co-hosts/facilitators of this video archive.

We are currently working in New York City and Los Angeles with a film editor.  At this point we are looking for funding, and are reaching out to organizations that provide grants or sponsorship.  We are also seeking more talented grandmothers and looking for contacts to help us pursue this initiative.

Thank you for your time. We appreciate your assistance.
